| Dental and spay on 10 year old yorkie? Hi Im new on here , i was needing some advice on my 10 year old yorkie. Abbys back teeth are very bad i have appointment scheduled for dec 19 to have them cleaned and at least 4 pulled. Im so worried about having her sedated has anyone done this before with an older yorkie? Abby also hasnt been spayed i was thinking about having this done at the same time. Would this be to hard on her does anybody recommend it? |

| My foster Scrappy was neutered and had a dental when he was older. Since he was a stray we don't know exactly how old he was, but he was def a senior. He did fine, but it did take him longer to recover than a younger dog. Just make sure you get bloodwork done beforehand.

| I think the big question is do you trust your vet? And that's a hard one, now Sprocket was not nearly as old when he has his dental/spay work done at the same time, but it was done at the same time, took him several days to recover and I would say it was the teeth more than anything else, just like when you go to the dentist. It hurts, the other? who knows ache a couple days. See what your vet says, mine said the spay takes no time, the dental takes more, as there is no space to work in with such a small mouth. I guess that's right. Anyway, good luck and pls keep us posted.

| Mine underwent dentals this year and are 12. I didn't worry about the sedation - I felt that they needed the procedures and therefore the benefit was greater than the small risks. Good luck, she will feel much better with her teeth clean and disease removed.

Do you know if they used a different sedation on them than they do the younger ones or do they use the same sedation. My friend used to work at a vet she said on the older ones they used propofol because it didnt go the liver n kidneys but the vet I went to said they use same sedation they just use extra precautions. This was first time i went to this vet but everyone ive talked to say they absolutely love them! I went to have her ears checked n thats when they noticed her teeth, but they helped so much with her skin allergies to they showed me shampoo to use, other vets ive went to in the past didnt do anything thing like that so i was real pleased with my visit with them, but still worried! | |

| Do you know if they used different anthesitics on them than they do on the younger ones or were they the same. My friend worked at a vet clinic and she said they used different for the older ones it was called propofol. The vet Im going to uses the same but just takes extra precautions. This was the first time going to this vet a few days ago when i took abby to get her ears checked but i was very pleased with them, everyone that ive talked to absolutely loves them. |

| Abby seems pretty healthy too, alot of ppl cant believe shes 10 years old. The lady I got her from said she was a year old but when i took her to the vet they said she was two so were just guessing shes 10, but she had been mistreated i guess thats why its took this long to even get her spayed i just hate her going under sedation that scares me more than anything her not waking up. But since I know she needs the dental now and has to go under sedation I would like to go ahead and do the spay too! |

Zachary's Mom Donating Member | My Chihuahua, Twinkie is almost 11. He will be getting a dental on Tuesday. I did not realize how bad his teeth were. He is very snappy and you can not begin to open and look in his mouth, you will get bit. One tooth I KNOW is really bad. And I think there is some infection. He is on antibiotics now before the surgery. My vets have been in practice since 1979. They are NOT vets with fancy offices. They KNOW how to do what they do and you don't overpay to pay for their fancy office and equipment. I trust them completely. I suspect his teeth are hurting him and the only option is surgery, as much as I hate to do it to an old dog. I will be praying that he comes through it OK. If it has to be done, it has to be done. We really don't have a choice. I KNOW everyone here will be praying for our babies. Louise and Zachary |
