| Smokey House Equals FREAKED YORKIE!! The craziest thing happened here at my house about 2 hours ago. It freaked me OUT! Was wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this.. I was cooking something in the oven and apparently something had spilled in there. The house became smokey. I mean, not enough to set of the smoke alarm, but enough to smell and see in the air. I fussed at hubby for spilling in the oven, but continued at the computer (on YT lol). Then, I hear hubby call me from the other room, "Hey, your daughter is FREEZING! She's shivering like crazy!" Well, knowing it was over 70 degrees in here (heater AND oven on), I immediately jumped up because I thought "shiver equals pain". I walked in the room and she's shaking uncontrollably and her mouth is open with her little curled tongue showing and she's breathing irratically (spelling). I was all over her in a heartbeat looking to see if she was hurting. I knew she had been eating dinner a few minutes earlier so I checked her mouth..no response other than "sheesh, Mom..stop". I noticed her tail was tucked so i thought maybe her booty was hurting (it has done this in the past when she got constipated ~ mineral oil has always solved that). It didn't seem to be that. Then I was wondering if maybe she had a UTI because yesterday, she did something out of character and peed my bed. While trying to figure it all out, I thought the breathing thing was the clue. Then, I realized that it all started when the house got a little smokey. So, I put her sweatshirt on and we went outside (70 degrees inside and 39 outside). After sitting in the chair outside and holding her, her breathing almost immediately went to normal and she only shook on and off. By the end, she was not shaking at all. My final conclusion that it was the smoke came when I said, "Ok, let's go inside and get a treat. We're all better." She jumped up to follow me but as soon as I opened the back door and she got to the stoop...she backed away and started whimpering. Well, 30 minutes later ...literally, after the smoke had cleared...all is well in my world again. She freaked over the smoke. I freaked over her freaking. *sigh* That was a very long hour for me...

| Interesting... I've never heard of this, but I know my male is really bothered by strong scents. He will leave the room if I use hairspray, air freshener, or have those plug in scent things. I'm glad you figure out what was wrong with her!

Sorry but I totally lol'd when you said "I fussed at hubby for spilling in the oven, but continued at the computer (on YT lol)." I could see you yelling and then returning back on YT, yeah that made me laugh |

| Literally a couple hours ago my neighbor had a fire and my window was propped open. Luma was freaking out too! It smelled so strongly of smoke! She hates strong scents. The poor thing can smell my nail polish from two rooms away and will stuff her nose deep into the creases of her bed.

| Yes one of mine freaks out about smoke, too. I turn on all exhaust fans and go outside with her. Then she's fine once the smoke has cleared.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | CLYDE HATES THE OVEN. HE absolutely hates it. Ever since the house got really smokey and the fire alarm went off he will not go anywhere near the stove when it is on. He will shake and shiver if the house fills will smoke. He will FREAK OUT if the fire alarm goes off. I think that she has the same fear that Clyde has. It is very strange, but the best thing to do is to take them out of the smoke and let the house air out. I'm glad she is okay now! Once Clyde got so scared he had an episode (He has seizures). I just try to keep him out of the room when I'm using the oven. |

| I'm glad I figured it out too...hubby was determined that I was crazy and that she was just cold. Silly man. lol I've never noticed Mandie having an issue with strong scents, which really made it all the more strange. It was definitely not a boring night at least lol Wow, Carmen! I hope your neighbor is ok!

| I know smoke sets off my sinuses along with asthma and since they can have both too it might be she is just sensitive to smoke.

| I think it might be instinct for dogs to be afraid of fire and smoke. Here is our little story...We went RV camping in November and had a bonfire nearby outside. My girls became so freaked out sitting with us that I had to put them in the RV. My friend's dog was the same way. So wonder if your pup was experiencing the same type of reaction?

| It is typical for small animals to suffer more quickly from smoke and other contaminates in the air because they have smaller lungs. The small amount of smoke and the scent of it could very well have been bothering her breathing a bit. She considered it a threat to her well being and reacted. She is a smart little dog. |
