Default Treats for the toothless

My MIL is in a nursing home that allows small dogs in the apartments on one side of the home if the patient is well enough to care for their dog. I have met a little lady that has a 14 year old Maltese that is as cute as a button. This little dog has only 4 teeth left in her mouth and can't handle any treats that are hard or crunchy.

Do any of you have any ideas what I could take in the way of treats for this elderly little Maltese? I would prefer something I could buy and good for her since I'm not sure what quality of food she is getting.

I have never heard of these. They have a treat that is easy to chew and offer samples. Thanks.

I would use these. They are more along the lines of a nutritional supplement or a high-quality food. They break apart very easily, so they could be easily managed by a dog with no teeth. I use them for trick training, and when I bring a couple to the dog park all of the dogs sniff them out before I've taken them out and they all go nuts for a little bite.

No problem. They seem to be a good company, but I have no experience with them. Maybe others will. I would purchase from them (if I had a dog) Ha!

I would worry that some of their products come from China.

They DO NOT come from China. You can buy them locally if you have a boutique type pet food store that carries high end pet food, and recently Petco started to carry these.

Well that's not what it says on the website. Some of their meat DOES come from China. Where it is sold has nothing to do with where it comes from. Even if it's manufactured in the US, the materials can come from outside the US. Its just imported.

Let's be 100% honest here, be specific, and not parse words. If you read their website, then you would have seen that the rabbit, and ONLY the rabbit that is in the raw and canned comes from China. All other protein sources and ingredients come from the USA (including the rabbit used in the kibble). Many members here at Yorkie Talk, that are VERY picky about what they feed their pups use Nature's Variety and have great results.

I don't feed their rabbit products to my pups just because it does come from China. There are a lot other varieties of their food and treats to choose from besides rabbit, and there is no reason to have a problem with the ones that don't contain rabbit.

Directly from their website:

At Nature's Variety, our nutritional philosophy is to source the highest quality, safest, and most nutritious ingredients in the world. We look for our ingredients domestically first. In the case of rabbit meat, we've found that the best supply of high quality, human grade rabbit is found in China. Therefore, we are currently sourcing rabbit meat specifically for our raw and canned rabbit diets from a trusted supplier in China. To help ensure that our strict quality and safety standards are rigorously enforced, this rabbit meat is regularly inspected and monitored by the PhD food scientist we have on staff. Additionally, members of the Nature’s Variety leadership team have personally visited and inspected the facility in China. We also employ extra testing (at an independent lab in the United States) to ensure that the rabbit is nothing short of our strictest standards for quality and nutrition.

I misspoke above, I found the following information, supplied by the company:

All poultry, pork, bison, and beef come from the U.S. and our lamb and venison are imported from Australia and New Zealand. All of our products are manufactured in the U.S., including the packaging we use. Vegetables and fruits are sourced from
the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East, depending on the ingredients. Our grains and starches are sourced from the U.S., Canada, and Brazil - herbs and spices from North America, Europe, and the Middle East. Our pharmaceutical grade vitamins and minerals are from North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. We try to source most of our
ingredients from the U.S. and turn to other locations only as needed. We are very stringent on our sourcing and have good relationships built with our vendors for quality ingredients.

I don't have a problem with any of this, especially based on feeding this brand for over three years without problem and the long-time experience of many others here that feed it as well without issue.

Another member (Rileydc) posted on another thread about freezing plain canned pumpkin and breaking off pieces to eat. Also, Greek yogurt would work too.

I would definitely try the samplez to see how the dog takes to it. Nothing lost there.

My little Chloe is missing some teeth so I have to buy her soft treats, she and Roscoe both LOVE the chewy treats from Cloud Star! I emailed them before I tried any to make sure that their ingredients are from the U.S. and their products are made in the U.S. They also sent free samples for my dogs to try because at the time I still had my Munchkin and she had so many food allergies and was so picky that I wanted to try them first.

Chloe and Roscoe have had the natural Peanut Butter “Wag More Bark Less” that are wheat free and the Buddy Biscuits Bacon & Cheese soft & chewy. They both go crazy when they see the bag. Here is the link to their website but they sell them at Petco and on wag.com.

I forgot to mention that I do break up the treats for Chloe because she does get them stuck in her teeth at times and this way she can eat them safely.
