Default My Zoe is getting Spayed, any suggestions

So the day is quickly approaching, I have to get my baby spayed this Friday. She was supposed to do it 3 months ago and the little stinker went into heat the week of her appointment. So she is now 11 months old which I am sort of glad about. She weighs 5 1/2 pounds so isn't tiny anymore. However she is getting 4 baby teeth pulled and micro chipped too. They will be doing the full blood workup and using laser, I am still a nervous wreck. If you were to give me advice, what is the best piece of advice you would give me? I do plan to sit at the vet all day during her surgery as well as take her home that night. Also how long does the actual surgery usually take?

Think positive and keep busy. I was a nervous wreck just like you but I went to work on the day of Brandi's spay and it kept my mind occupied. Otherwise I would have went crazy.

After the surgery, the vet gave me some pain meds. She was groggy the first day but by the second day, I couldn't keep her still, except for a little soreness she was back to normal.

Sounds like you have all the bases covered. I have boys, so slightly different. I think people with girls usually recommend a onesie to wear to keep the pup from licking the surgical site.

Best wishes to your little one. Definitely keep busy while she is at the vet. Makes the times go faster.

I'm sure she'll do just fine. My only advice is for post-op stuff. When I spayed Mandie, the following day - she was shaking and hurting when when she tried to poo. She never stopped pooping but it was hurting her. So, I would suggest to keep an eye on that...if she seems to be having problems, you could give her a tiny bit of mineral oil on her food (and even rub a little on her bum).

Oh, and she might not want to drink at first...I used a dropper and gave her water every so often and then she started drinking on her own again by the next day

Oh the dropper for water is a great idea, I hadn't thought about that one. I do plan to get her onsies to wear, any idea on the size I should purchase for 5 1/2 pounds? I plan to take my computer to the vet and sit throughout the day, just in case something goes wrong I want to be there. I know the day will go slow, but I just can't stand the thought of dropping her off under such scary circumstances. I just keep looking at her today and holding her, and having all these what if questions going through my miind. She is the only yorkie I have ever had and I can't believe how I have fallen in love with her. I never knew that it was possible.

On the size, it might be best to get premie size. Not every place has them so start looking now.

For the onezie - Mya was just over 7 pounds when she was spayed, and I bought her size 3 months - only because she is VERY long and premie wouldn't have been long enough.

The night of she was very sore.. she curled up with me and just shook like a leaf, to the point that I called the vet as I was so concerned.. By the next day she was ok, still sore but mostly back to normal. I sent Oliver to my friends house for the night so I could solely focus on Mya. Having mommy all to herself helped. When she couldn't be on my lap, she was in her crate, to keep her calm.

Good luck! She'll be fine, sounds like you're well prepared

My Zoe shakes so easy so iam a little afraid of that. I always feel so sorry for her even if it is because she is a little cold and I know she is okay. I hate it when she shakes. I guess I will ensure the house is real warm and have warm blankets for her. I am starting to get scared. I am planning to bring her home that night, but how will I know if something is wrong or if it is just a normal reaction to the surgery. Oh why do they have to go through this. I just need to stay strong or I will talk myself I to canceling.

Kyra just had hers done on Monday we couldn't find a onsie small enough so she is wearing her little doggie pants backwards lol. It looks funny but it works to stop her licking and this way she doesn't have to wear an e collar. She woke up today still shaking a little from the pain so I gave her her pill and she is doing great now. The biggest problem is keeping her from romping with Laddy.

Trust your vet with your precious Yorkie. So many dogs are spayed and vets are experts at this. If you have chosen a vet wisely, not to worry. Your little one will come through this just fine. There is pain meds they give to keep her comfortable. Let us know as I will say a little prayer for a safe spay.

Premie would be too small for Zoe. I used a this size for my Luci and she is barely 3 pounds and it's real little.

If Zoe is about 5 1/2 pounds, the size newborn should fit her, if not then go the next size up which would be 0-3 months.

If you can measure her length and while she is at the Vet run to Wal Mart with the tape measure in hand and check out the size of them.

That does sound funny. I know about a week before I had Luci spayed, I went to the Carter Baby Store and I found some really cute onsie's in premie. I got a set of 3 for $10.00.

Glad to hear she is doing great.

Yeah, now that I think about it, you are definitely right. Mandie was under 4 lbs...wasn't thinking how much bigger 5 1/2 would be.

I have never heard of using a onesie to cover the incision. That is a great idea! I will forsure get one for Teeka, when it is time to have her spayed. Thanks for the info!
