YT 500 Club Member | Thanksgiving Food For Honey My little cousins and big cousins will be over for the holidays. When Honey goes to the table they give her food (Ugh). My question is what can she eat off the table for Thanksgiving and what cant she eat. Im not worried about them giving her food Im just worried about them giving her the wrong thing. Hope I dont sound crazy. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | How much does Honey weigh? A 5 pound dog can only have about 200 calories a day, so you don't want to give her too much. A little unsalted turkey would be okay. NO Gravy, or no turkey skin, that could cause pancreatitis. Unsalted unbuttered potatoes would be okay, but no dressing. It’s not the food that’s so bad, it’s how we cook it. Joey eats green beans, but the way most people make them at Thanksgiving would be unhealthy. I think an even better treat is taking our dogs out for a walk, I think we should show our love through exercise and time spent with them rather than food, especially food that may be bad for them. You wouldn't believe how many dogs end up with an attack of pancreatitis on Thanksgiving, so be careful and have a great holiday!

YT 500 Club Member | You guessed it right she is only about 5 pounds. Thats why I am nervous but thank you so much and I will be sure to tell them not to give her anything at all because I dont want to take the chance of something happening to her. |

| I think if the family won't listen about not giving Honey food, perhaps make a little plate of food just for Honey and leave it on the table. If someone really wants to give her some food, give it from the plate that's hers. Or I think your family should just respect what you ask them to do, but we all know that's just too much to ask isn't it? LOL

YT 500 Club Member | That is smart and yes it is way to much to ask for them not to give her food. We will see how it goes and if they start asking I will make her a little plate because Im sure if I say no they will sneak it to her when I turn my head. |

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | If the family doesn't listen. Then I would put honey in another room at dinner with her dinner. Let the kids put down her bowl and water. He is not by the table so everyone will not be giving her food under the table |

| Actually that's right. It's not a good habit for the dog to be begging for food at the table anyway, regardless of it being Thanksgiving or any other day.

| I guess you could tell them if they feed her something bad and she gets sick, you will forward them the vet bill. Might deter someone, maybe?

| Doesn't work with my family. I'm a bit nuts when it comes to this, and use a method I'm sure no one else uses. I just have Kaji sit on my lap, or sit in my chair with me. He knows not to ask, so he just doesn't. He lies right down, and if he's good, I'll throw some veggies in with his kibble. Win win.

| I would buy a play pen and keep her in there while everyone eats. To much fat like in ham can cause pancreatitis and it is very painful and can cost a lot of money if your dog needs to be hospitalized. Some parts of turkey can be fatty and cause diarrhea. Onion and garlic and things with them are bad. Chocolate is very bad. The best thing for Honey is to be kept away from the table.

Also I remember the very first yr that I was a tech, the day after Thanks giving an elderly man came running in the door crying his eyes out & holding his little peach colored poodle who was not breathing. He & his wife had company that day & were making turkey sandwiches & he gave his poodle a piece of turkey, well it was just big enough to lodge in her throat & it did, by the time he rushed her to the vet she was gone. I can remember like it was yesterday, the poor old guys face looking down at his poodle that had died in his arms because he loved her & shared his turkey with her just as he had done many yrs before. I can say that was the saddest thing I had ever seen & it breaks my heart all over again every time I think about it. People don't realize that if your pup is not used to getting turkey or any other kind of human food & they have been smelling it cook all day & they REALLY want some of it, they have a tendency to gobble it up without chewing it causing a serious chocking risk. PLEASE people if you give your pup treats like human foods they are not used to having, be sure to cut it up tiny enough not to choke on.

| Vets say that Thanksgiving is one of their busiest times of the year because of so many dogs getting sick from eating stuff they shouldn't have. Some of these poor dogs don't make it. Make sure your pet gets nothing that has fat. No pie, no turkey fat or skin, no gravy, no dessert period. A few small bites of turkey might be alright or better yet just take along some healthy doggie treats. I always buy dehydrated meats for Gracie. She loves them. They are one ingredient and I know the source so she stays healthy and we are both happy. |

This is exactly what I do!! When the food on the special little plate is gone, no more food for the baby! While I do not like to feed from the formal table, in the evening when people are eating off TV trays in front of the TV, I will allow it. The rest of the time, I keep mine in my bedroom away from all the running, throwing, jumping and arguing and hollering and crying,.....and I also like to keep them away from the kids too!! I usually boil a chicken breast and put some of that on the "special plate", 6 canned green beans, 6 bites of cucumber which they adore,4 bites boiled sweet potato and I get a doggie cake for Holidays....baked in the tiny mini cupcake pans, so they can also enjoy sharing dessert with the baby.... These "bites" of cut up food are about the size of 1/2 a small green grape, so I dont think I am going over alloted calorie content for a day.... Hailee is only allowed 114 cal/day since she is on a diet....
