| I sprained my ankle... Trying to get away from a little kid running towards us yelling 'puppy, puppy!' w/his med sized hyper dog...who barked like cwazzie last time we saw him. I was walking Princess & Turbo & I've been training them (mainly Turbo bc when he acts up, Princess will follow) not to bark @ other dogs. They both got this 'fear' from me. There were 2 incidents in the past w/2 different GSD coming up to Princess & Turbo & both x's, my reaction was negative & I screamed both x's. It was such a surprise & it happened so fast, both dogs off leash & their noses on P&T even b4 I had any time to pick them up. I was more scared that Turbo would nip @ the GSD, cuz that's what he does & they would nip him back. Anyways, I've been working w/them for months & they were both improving. Not barking when they see other dogs or pulling on the lead trying to get to them. Well, all that training went out window yesterday. The kid must've been 6-7 yrs old & his older brother has got to be 10 or younger. I looked back & decided to cross the street & must've stepped on uneven ground on the grass. So now, Turbo must've picked up on my pain/panic annoyance or whatever & starts barking like cwazzie & that sends Princess off too. Can you picture this: 2 yorkies barking like mad @ 2 kids & a dog (who now stands there innocently) & the flustered owner limping across the street pulling the 2 little yorkie terrors. I don't know if I should cry or laugh. loll

| Oh no! I hope your ankle heals quickly, Jenny. I have to admit, I am fearful of larger dogs and have unintentionally instilled fear in my boys. Many times the fear is justified when the larger dog is not behaving and/or not under the control of a person who knows what they are doing. Balancing training with safety is tough.

| I'm so sorry you hurt your ankle trying to get away from those awful dogs. Shame on that owner. Have you tried walking with the button-opening umbrella to open suddenly with a whoosh and hold between your dogs and oncoming dogs to dissuade them. It has worked for me every time I've used it. They usually back off and go the other way but if not, at least they don't get past it and you don't get so scared knowing it will keep your babies safe. I think a dog would have to be rabid or in the full red zone to try to get past seeing that big black thing open, blossom out before them with that noise and keep coming with such force & determination as to get through it. Use the RICE protocol on that ankle ASAP, doctor if gets really painful/swollen, toes go blue or white, etc.

| Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Use ice for only 15 mins. at a time, off 15 or so, back on for 15 and so on. Use an Ace Bandage, NOT TOO TIGHT, just gently rolled onto the ankle/foot and secured. Elevate that lower leg on pillows above the level of your heart.

| Work with your little ones with a smaller version of the umbrella out in the yard when they are far off. Treat them every time you open it. Keep doing that until you can open it nearer and nearer them as they get very tasty boiled chicken or some other nice treat. Repeat the same thing in the house, starting to open it in the doorway of the room they are in and eventually moving closer with treats on each and every opening. Segue to the big umbrella in time. If you slowly work up to it, they come to accept it. Tibbe is not thrilled with it but it keeps him - and me - safe. I figure even if it does scare him during an incident, the scare is far less than if a big dog gets at him.

| Aw, that's too bad. Did they stop following you? I'm always nervous about loose dogs... That's why I never walk my two without dh so that we can both pick up a dog.
