| Mean dogs? I have such a sweet puppy. Hes 10 months old and so lovable. The other day though, I was at work and a woman came in with a yorkie. I went over to assist her and the dog snapped at me. I didnt know how to react because I wasnt even close to the dog or reaching for the dog. The woman said the dog doesnt like strangers...so I was wondering if yorkies are overly protective or aggressive? I mean, of course it depends on how they are raised and introduced to people...but that was so strange since she had the dog in a bag and seemed like they went everywhere together. I should add that my yorkie doesnt sit in a bag, he is allowed to walk or I carry him if there are lots of people. I also only take him places where there is no food served (because I think its rude) so hes been to the outdoor mall (where all the stores allow dogs) and the pet stores and today we went to lowes. People all looked and petted him and he was loving the attention, especially from babies |

| Sounds like that dog might be "too" attached to his owner and was "guarding" her. Training can improve this issue and no, it's not a Yorkie trait. Most Yorkies are very social! One of mine loves everyone (Izzy) and my Luna is afraid of most people/animals. She has gotten much better with time and socialization,

| I think some small dogs are like that, overprotective and tend to get away with things a larger dog never would, so before long, they become a little unstable in their behavior, tending to assume some alpha rolls in the relationship. A well-mannered dog that knows its place in the family hierarchy would see its owner as the family or pack leader and never strike out on its own like that! It would trust her to deal with everything and only step over those leadership bounds if it saw she was literally physically in trouble and/or being threated in some way by another person or animal.

| Any dog can be aggressive. I have seen more aggressive big dogs then little dogs. My yorkie and my moms rescue are not aggressive and absolutely love other people and most yorkies I have come across have not be aggressive.

| Both of my yorkies have been love bugs. My rescue Jackson (maltese) is shy but once he knows you are not going to hurt him he is all over you. Jackson barks at people which I do not like but when I tell them he is scared and they talk to him he is ok. I just wish he wouldn't bark or growl.

Almost 100% of the time, only dogs who are allowed to misbehave and do as they please over time turn into biters so I wouldn't worry one whit. Yorkies are not predisposed to biting any more than any dog. But some small dogs are too-often allowed to get away with "murder" in how they behave and can escalate into a biter once they see themselves as the leader of their family pack, thus guardian/protector of their owner. I've personally experienced and been told of more than a few greeting situations with small dogs that will nip at feet or hands and such, whereas people with larger dogs usually can't begin to let their Rottie do that or people would report them to Animal Control for having a "dangerous animal". However, when a 5 lb. Pom tries it, people just grimace or laugh uncomfortably but aren't scared! And small dogs do "attack" and bite, but you just don't see it reported and news headlines about it as they usually do very little or no damage. I've had 3 Yorkies in my lifetime for 9, 12 1/2 and now 5 years and none of them has been a biter. My sister had one who never bit. Get your Yorkie and enjoy.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | [QUOTE=yorkietalkjilly;4037130]Get your Yorkie! They are the best of all breeds to me! You will never be sorry and if you love attitude combined with smarts and a loving nature, they have it in spades! Small and portable, they can go almost everywhere and easily curl into your lap anywhere. People who don't even like having dogs in their homes at all usually don't mind having a lovely little Yorkie over to visit! They are easy to care for without the onerous coat care of a Poodle or the shedding of a Corgi. And a Yorkie can sleep right on your pillow beside your head as my Tibbe does!
