Weird behavior after eating. For the last couple days Giorgio has been acting weird. He will eat, stand by me and then with his tail tucked down, he will go to his crate and he won't come out. A hour later, he's back to normal. He's home fed and his last blood work was fine last month. His stools seem a little hard to me but he won't eat the pumpkin I try to give him. I'm going to call the vet but it scares me because he has never acted like this before. His little tummy was a bit hard as well. Everytime he eats anything at all this happens. Wondering should I do a bland diet and maybe sooth his tummy before feeding him his normal food.

| A bland diet wouldn't hurt for a few days. String beans (4-6 per meal) can add fiber and make poos softer. Maybe smaller meals would help. Sounds like he may be having excess gas? Try holding him upright a few minutes right after he eats, this will help any gas to escape... kind of like burping a baby. Also, an xray would be good to rule out things like foreign bodies, and give the vet a better idea of what's going on with him. Also, I'd have the vet send off a fecal sample to the lab for analysis. An imbalance of bacteria could cause this. Also ask the vet about getting him on probiotics. This will flood his gut with good bacteria and will aid in his digestion. Hope he's feeling better soon...

Thanks kjc, I was thinking that too. I'll call the vet hospital to see about getting him in. He's not vomitting or anything so I'm keeping an eye on him.

I would be concerned as well. If there have been no changes in his diet it would seem unusual for him to start having digestive problems, although I suppose it could happen. Having him checked out would certainly be a good idea.

Just made an appointment for him for tomorrow at the U of I vet hospital. This isn't something I would trust Banfield to handle to my liking.

Just a quick update for those reading I wind up taking Giorgi to the vet today. I was able to get him into internal medicine, so he is there now getting blood drawn and an ultrasound. He is beyond ticked with me. He wouldn't even kiss me goodbye. I had to pull him out the crate because when I said "vet" he gave me that look. I will pick him up from the dr later after they are done with him. So grateful for Care Credit. They mentioned pancreatitis and maybe IBS. If you would say a few prayers for His Royal Brattiness, I got two teens but he is like my baby. I just want him to be okay. I will post later when I get the verdict.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | What's his typical diet like? Not sure what you mean by home fed.

Update Well we're back home. Giorgios ultrasound was normal, his blood work is all in range now. They have to call me back about a test they are running on his adrenal glands because they looked kinda small. They put him on Pepcid because she wants to see if what we are dealing with is gastric or possibly Addison' disease. I have to cancel his dental at Banfield on Friday. When I say he's home fed, it means I cook his food. I use free fed chicken, angus beef, rice, beans, broccoli and supplements. He also takes a multivitamin daily. When he was on commercial food he had elevated liver and kidney counts. 6 months of home cooking and milk thistle, his numbers are all in range.

I don't think it's pancreatitis or IBS if his stool is normal. I've only been told pumpkin if they have the runs to firm it up. Teegy had a bout of pancreatitis and was shooting blood out his backside. I wouldn't get too terribly worried, just keep an eye on him, do you give him a probiotic in his diet just to keep the intestines happy it may also soften his stool up a little if you are worried about it being too firm. just make sure his diet is 80% meat 10% organs and 10% bones fish oil. My vet also told me when their tummy is upset fibre and veg is not good for them as it's hard for their system to digest. So if you are putting veg in the home diet puree it up so the dogs system doesn't have to work so hard to digest it. Adding a digestive enzyme may help too as it breaks the food down and gives the pancreas a break if you are worried about pancreatitis

I used to give him a probiotic, I'm about to order him some again. He's resting in his crate now. I know my husband will hit the roof if he sees the vet bill. Lol. I pay it. He doesn't understand the means I go through to keep my baby well. I am hoping this is something simple. If not, we'll I will have to do what I can to take care of him. He's more than my dog, he's like my sons.
