| New to YorkieTalk Hi. My name is Sandra and I justed joined Yorkie Talk. I have two 3 month old Yorkies, two sisters from the same litter. I'm 66 years old and these are my first "babies" (dogs and children). Just moved to the south from New York City and my husband wouldn't let me have a dog in New York. I love my puppies (Lexie after Lexington Avenue where we lived) and (Maddie after Madison Avenue, one street away). But, I am overwhelmed. We were going to get one and when we went to choose, my husband said "oh let's get both." Of course, I was thrilled, but now not so thrilled. I love them both equally, but am at a loss about potty training. I have had them for one month. Started out the first few nights in crate and they woke up barking in the middle of the night. The last few nights they have been sleeping in our bed! As you can see I've gone from the right thing to probably the worse thing I could do. Any help would be appreciated. Any guidance about raising two puppies at the same time would be also appreciated. Sandra |

| Welcome to Yorkie talk! You will learn a lot about your babies by reading all the information available here. As far as the barking in the middle of the night while in crate could be that they need to potty. Also you could try putting the crate Next to your bed as they like to be close to you. With two you just have to do everything twice, but what a joy they will be. I also bought the Iris Pet Pen. I got it from Amazon and I would have to say it has been the best item I have Purchased. My yorkie stays in it when I cannot watch him. I have his crate on one side and a pee pad on the other side along with the water and food bowl. He is about ninety percent trained to go to the pad. He is 7 months old and I got him when he was 17 weeks old (the end of June). I hope this helps. |

| Welcome to YT! And , congrats on your new babies!! I know it's hard not to take them out of the crate when they cry, but it really is best when potty training. Just make sure you set an alarm to take them out at a specific time during the night (and that they "went" right before you put them in the crate). Then, you'll know that they are only crying to see if it will get them out (not that they really have to "go"). Eventually, they will learn that crying won't bring Mommie running. Hang in there. And ask any questions you have...the people here are so supportive and knowledgeable. They help me every day with something!

| Welcome! You and I both got our pups about the same time. Bentley is full of challenges but has so many pay-offs! Hang in there, and use this site. I am on here all the time because I have so many questions. Consistency is the key! Also, I recently found the "Search" icon that you see above, if I want all the comments on a particular subject it does recent and past. Good luck with your babes.

| Welcome to YT, and congrats on your babies! I love their names! As for the potty training, it's going to be A LOT of work, and I don't mean to sound like a "downer", but it will... Do you let them have free roam of your house, or are they sectioned off? If you let them have free roam it would probably be better to section them off to a smaller section of your home until their fully potty trained. It would also help to put them on scheduled feedings, if you haven't done that already, so that you could monitor when they eat, that makes it easier to estimate when they'll have to potty. I would take them out every 30min or every hour. Also praise them when they go potty outside or on the pee pad to let them know that, that's a good thing. Dogs love praise and learn from it fairly quickly. Lastly be consistent, and don't get frustrated or give up. They'll get it evenutally!! Good luck

| Hi and Welcome to YT! Oh my! Sounds like you have your hands full! Basically, young pups should be confined to one room, and not allowed the run of the house until they are potty trained. Teach them to potty on a pee pad or newspapers, reward them with tremendous praise AND a treat when you catch them in the act of using the pad. Here is a list of threads I have posted in about potty training: potty training, kjc - Google Search As for sleeping in the bed... I think most end up there, lol! I think you may have a hard time switching them back now... Also check out the YT Library Puppy section...

| Welcome to YorkieTalk! Good luck with two! It's going to take a lot of consistency and patience... I would crate train them until they can hold their bladders all night. We would all love to see pictures of Lexie and Maddie!

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Congratulations on your new pups. They will be great once you get through the potty training and chewing phases. I am your age, and it felt just like tending to a baby. It seems you have to watch them all of the time. I have just one and it was a little difficult at times, but I didn't have an xpen. I wouldn't trade Calleigh for anything. She is my love. I'm sure you'll feel the same. You will need lots of patience and love during the first year or so. I know you'll be so glad you have the both of them to play with each other.

| Welcome and congratulation on you new babies. When I first got Gracie she ended up in my bed from the first night. I have had dogs all my life so it was noting new to me. If you use puppy pads at night you will find it makes things much easier on you. Gracie usually slept though the night as a puppy but if she did get up I would just put her on the puppy pad so she could go pee and then she would go back to sleep with me. Until they are trained you just cannot let them out of your sight when they are inside. You have to either get them to the puppy pad on time or outside. You have to learn to recognize their signals that they do just before they pee or poo and get them to where they need to go. Some people use exercise pens to put their babies in when they cannot watch them. But you need to have pee pads in an exercise pen. It helps to put the pee pads in a secure frame so the puppy does not rip them apart or play with them when unattended. You will make much faster progress in training by spending as much time with them as possible and getting them to the potty in time.Giving a treat when they get it right encourages them to repeat the action. Remember they are little pups and they have little bladders. They need to be close to the potty. When you feed them the food goes through them fairly quickly so be ready for action! An untrained puppy or dog that is left to it's self will pee where ever they happen to be and that creates a pattern in their mind that this activity is OK, not to mention the fact that they can smell where they have gone in the past and will go there again when they smell that scent. I can only imagine how busy you are trying to train 2 pups at the same time! I hope things fall in line for you. It is going to be a full time thing for you until they get the idea of what you are trying to teach them. |

| I agree with the last poster. Sounds like you have been given some great advice already!! Two at once is a challenge. One was a challenge for me. I would have been delighted if my hubby had said lets get them both! I can't talk him into a second one, so I am jealous of course. I liked the idea of getting an x-pen. They can sleep in it at night with a couple of potty pads. That way you don't have to get up and they learn to go on the pads when you are not there or the weather is bad. I did crate at first with the crate on the side of the bed. I also had the x-pen for Copper to be in if I had to be gone for a few hours. This worked out well, because when he went to stay at my daughter's house so we could take a trip out of town, he stayed in the x-pen at night for her with no problems. You have to decide how you want this to go and then just do it. If you don't want the dogs in bed with you or disturbing your sleep, I suggest trying an x-pen. Otherwise crating them at first is a good way to have them learn the potty routine. You can let them sleep with you later when they get it down. Best wishes on whatever you decide.
