| Help please! My baby lies on her peed pads! Hi! I am new to this forum, hello everyone!! I have a baby yorkie (she is 10 weeks old). At morning I take her out and she eliminates and then has breakfast. During the day she is either outside or playing with my parents at home. I play with her when I get back form work and place her in a pen at night to sleep. I place pee pads in case she wants to go, and always uses them. I have one concern, she lies down on her pad and plays with her toys, even if the pad is peed on! I don't understand since she has a bed, but prefers the pad. She also steps on her pee or poo if she's very excited or playing once she is out (is this normal?), the space she is in is quite large. It grosses me out that she always smells like pee. Is there any way I can stop her from doing that? Thanks for your advise! Dannie |

| Where did she come from? If she came from a puppy mill or bad breeder she might have had no choice but to lay in her pee and poo and she might be used to it. Does she has a spot to lay where there is no puppy pad or bed? Maybe getting a tray that the puppy pad goes in will keep her from laying on it or maybe a dog litter box and put the pad in the bottom instead of litter.

| I use the top of a rubbermaid tote turned up with the peepad on top. The pup has to step up onto it but it is not too high, also keeps the pee from rolling off the edge. |

| I don’t think it matters where the puppy came from, just because a puppy likes to lay on the puppy pad doesn’t mean they came from a bad breeder or puppy mill. How rude to make that assumption. I have heard a lot of puppies doing this- In fact my dog use to always stand on his pad and try to lay- Anytime you see her laying on her pad just call her to get off, then maybe give her a treat. Maybe do that until she stops… I think it is just a “puppy thing”

| Please do not leave your dig outside, especially a puppy, especially a small dog. Try switching her to cork litter, or a grated potty pan. My pup mill rescue would potty on his bed abd lay sleep next to it...takes a lot if slow steps work, if yoyr puppy is from a pet store this may be ab issue ongoing, however puppies often go ecerywhere abywhere abd if not left with a normal healthy behaving dam long enough were not trained to potty away from the den. Consult a behaciorist. Cheaper than you think abd VERY worth it in the long run.

A dog does not have to stand to poop or pee, large breed dogs from pup mills especially have been noted to potty laying down. This behavior is NOT absolute in identification of a pup mill dog ir being from a bad breeder, however it is a sign of it for sure. Ask anyone with real life experience in rehabbing such dogs ...

| Keeping a clean nest is not always a given. Some pups take a long time to learn our rules. 'I peed on it, it is mine.' can be Doggy thinking, if it smells like me it is mine. Some dogs, not just puppies will lay on pee pads or chew belly bands and sniff butts with glee. Dogs are not people. We are turned off by the smell of vomit, urine, and feces, but dogs find them interesting messages and (uck) sometimes tasty snacks. In fact most dogs love kitty poo. All of my puppies walked in pee and poo when they were young. Even human infants will play with their own poo. We teach our children what is acceptable. And the Mama dog teaches acceptable behavior to her pups. If she doesn't, we must teach the puppy. I suggest using a litter pan for the pee pad this gives the potty place real boundaries. When she lays on her bed or takes a toy to her bed, praise with GOOD BED. This starts teaching her to go to her Bed. Later this will become an automatic behavior, you will be able to point and say 'Go To Bed" and she will promptly go to her bed. Her bed is always a good, safe, happy place that smells like Mama. You can use a hand sized towel that smells like you on her bed. When you want her to get in her crate put the towel in there point and say the cue words 'Go To Bed'. She will learn that it is good to play, eat, get treats and sleep on her bed. The towel can also be used under her food bowl at feeding time. I suggest buying three or more identical hand towels, so when dirty ones are being washed you have enough. It also makes sense to buy a matching bath towel for her baths. Choosing a different color from the people towels is also perk. It is simple to put your sent on them, just rub against your face, arm pits, feet or your neck. I have found what we call the Mama towel can be very comforting to a puppy in their bed, car seat, and X-pen. One last thing, just like real children Yorkies have to learn the rules of their family , be patient. Good training lasts a life time. Hope this helps.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | We can't forget the pup is only 10 weeks old. Experienced breeders say that the mother begins the housebreaking by pushing her pups to the pee pad, when she smells that they have to pee. The mother also licks the pup clean, and you can duplicate this by wiping her with a warm cloth and changing pee pads frequently.
