Love My 4 Week Old Yorkie

Hello! I'm new to this site and the Yorkie world.
I have an adorable 4 week old baby girl.
(No name yet.)
Her mother died very tragically when she was 6 days old
and I've been caring for her since.
Bottle feeding, keeping her warm, relieving her..etc.

She is 100% healthy (says the vet)
and has just started walking today!
Her birthday is August 11th.

My question is-
How big was your baby/babies when they were a month old?
How big are they full grown?

I'm asking because I would love for her to be under 5 lbs.
Her mother was 3, father is 5.
Mother's parents are very small.
But i'm unsure about the dad's.

Thank you.

Did you breed this baby's parents? I don't think her adult size is going to be predictable... I doubt very many people know how much their yorkies weighed at 4 weeks because it is best for them to stay with their parents until 12 weeks.

I am so very sorry your pups mother died. Can I ask how she died? I have heard it is very dangerous and a big no no to breed a female yorkie under 5 pounds so kinda wondering if that had to do with her death? At a month old there really is no way to really tell how big she is gonna be everything is a big guess because all of a sudden they can shoot up to bigger then you thought. Is there a reason you want her under 5 pounds?

Congrats on your new furbaby. You came to the right place for information. Coversmom and Callie's mom had some great questions. I have read a lot on this forum about size and it is definitely not better to have an undersized Yorkie. The smaller Yorkies are more prone to health problems especially if the breeder does not have a lot of knowledge and experience. I hope your little one continues to grow big and strong and I am truly sorry for the loss of her mother. Continue to read lots of info on here. You will learn a great deal! Welcome!

Welcome to YT, I wish it could have been under better circumstances. I am sorry for the loss of your pups mom..as two other posters have said a pup under 5lbs should not be bred...as well the sire was bigger than the dam? Should it not have been the other way around...mom bigger than dad? I am sooo so sorry you lost your girl, perhaps an experienced breeder will come on and offer you some help...you will find a wealth of information here...again welcome.

I am very sorry to hear the consequences of a momma yorkie passing. Was the actual birth of the pups the reason for her passing? I ask bc it is very risky for a dam under 5 lbs to be bred and give birth without complications.

To answer your question, how big at one month? I don't know. As most here did not get our pups that young. Even at 8 weeks (2 months) is too young but it is plausible. At one month, only breeders could answer that question.

One more question, you said momma's parents were small, but unsure of the dad's. who owned the dad? Any way to find out? Or did you have nothing to do with the breeding and just came upon the pup?

Been there done that !

However, "hope" may be all you have. The Sire and Dame of both mine are standard, and My Male Sneakers is now 13.5 lbs, and My Female Becca is 8.3 lbs !

Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I am so sorry the Mama was lost. Once a Chow mix Mama dog, was hit by a car. The distraught family brought four pups, who were only two weeks old to the rescue. Volunteers took turns fostering the pups. Another time, there was a abandoned terrier mix, that died, a blood clot went to her lungs. It was so sad. We had three little pups to nurse that were only 3 days old ! We were fortunate that we also had a volunteer with a good hearted poodle mix named Pepper. She took over feeding them when they were 5 days old, all survived and were adopted. I hope every thing goes good for your tiny puppy. I can't even guess about how big the dog will be. There is just too many unknowns. Best wishes and prayers.

Congrats on your baby and Welcome to YT. Seems like you have been doing a good job so far, I couldn't imagine taking care of something that small and precious!!

Peanut is 4.5 lbs and he is 5 years old. I can't remember what he was at a month, I want to say he was 2.5 ish at 2 months.

My heart goes out to the unfortunate little momma...I can only pray her demise was NOT related to being bred at such a tiny weight...that would make her death all the more tragic, as it would have been completely unnecessary. It is the pedigree behind the breeding pair that determines the size of puppies. This "size factor" in the pedigree needs to be researched at least 7 generations back....a working knowledge of the lines behind your breeding pair, and what they have routinely produced thru the generations, will tell you how large you might expect your baby to be. Again, my heart breaks for the tiny little momma that I am fearful sacrificed her life to have a litter of babies....so tragic, so uncalled for. Good luck with had rearing this baby girl.

Thank you every one for such kind words!
My baby is beautiful and growing every day! I love her too much!
Her name is Ellie, and she is a momma's girl!

Her mother drowned in the owner's children's swimming pool. It was probably 5 ft deep...
Kids let Bella (the mother) outside on accident and no one noticed until it was too late.

Ellie is roughy 14 oz - 1 lb. and she is 7 weeks tomorrow.
I'm guessing she will be very small... However, she's very healthy. SO much energy.

I'm not sure if my first reply showed up, so I'll write it again.
No, momma didn't die because of anything related to birth. In fact it wasn't her first batch.. She drowned in the owner's children's swimming pool, it's roughly 5 ft deep... Kids let Bella outside on accident and before anyone realized it was too late.. My puppy who is now Ellie is 7 weeks tomorrow. Just between 14 oz and 1 whole lb. She is very healthy. Tons of energy... Playful, loving, and enjoys cuddling! I love her! Too much. Thank you for the kind words about her mother.

You are very young (and very pretty). There are many things that you need to learn here so I really hope you stick around so that you can learn all the reasons why your babies Mom was to small to breed, probably why she died, and how to properly care for your beautiful little girl! I think if you keep reading and learning you will become a wonderful advocate for your pup and for all the pups!

You have done a wonderful job caring for your pup, she is beautiful...your dedication to her health and well being is incredible and I personally am in awe!

Now remember, it is especially important to stay on top of this little ones health and well being...just because the vet said she is healthy doesn't mean shes out of the woods yet..you have to be tenacious in monitoring her for any changes, these little ones can go down hill very fast.

Keep us posted and more pics please!!!
