Default Hello all, I'm new and have a problem :/

Hi all, I have a 4 year old yorkie, from witch I cut the hair every summer (it gets very hot in here) and it usually grows back in 1-2 months to the floor. This year I cutted it in the beginning of June as usually, and it's still the same. It didn't grew back at all...
She's very healthy, her behavior is the same, the nails grow, everything is normal... should I worry? Anyone has any idea what might cause this?

Sorry for my English, but I am writing from Portugal, we don't have yorkie forums, and I wanted good info

Growing back to the floor in two months is very fast. I don't know how tall she is, but most Yorkies hair only grows about 1/4 of inch a month, with cotton coats growing faster than silky coats. Did you cut it or shave it? If it's been 3 months, it should have grown about 3/4 of an inch, and if you really don't think it's grown at all, I'd see a vet. By the way, has she be spayed? Welcome to Yorkietalk!

Thanks :P She's not been spayed, and I never shaved her completely, I cut about 3 quarters of the hair, and usually in the end of august it's already on the floor again, she's very small... I have a cat and she's about half the size of the cat.
And it didn't grow at all... nothing :/
So I should just go to the vet right?
I thought maybe with age or something, it could start growing slower... That's why I came to ask, it could be something simple, that I didn't know

It does seem so that the rate of growth you describe before is kind of fast. I had Gracie's hair length cut just to below her belly at the end of May and it has grown about and inch and a half since then. I don't think it will get near the floor until around December. I was actually amazed it has grown as fast as it did.
If your dog's hair has not grown back at all then that would also be very unusual. Maybe an Omega 3 supplement may help. Has the skin gotten dried out from the sun maybe? Dry skin can effect the roots and the hair growth. Stress of any kind can also cause changes.

My previous answer didn't show up... dunno why :x
anyway, i usually cut around 3 quarters of the hair, I don't shave her totally. And she's very small, around 700 grams (I'm sorry, i don't know your measures). She's about half the size of my cat... usually I cut in the beginning of June and in the end of August is almost normal... (if that's weird I didn't know, she was always like that). But now it didn't grew at all... nothing. I'm very concerned. Would that supplement help with that? Or do you think I should take her to the vet? ah and she isn't spayed... :P
Thanks for the reply, and again, sorry for the bad English :X

Ah, about the sun I don't think it's a problem but I'll check... and about stress, very honestly, she's ALWAYS stressed. Always jumping, moving, trembling, "smiling" lol but i think it's normal from the race!??? A huge problem she has is when I receive visitors she pees all over, but accidentally... the veterinarian said it's normal... ?!?!

Submisive urination might be common in puppies, but I wouldn't say it's normal in older dogs. Read more about it here. Submissive Urination : The Humane Society of the United States

WElcome toYt. Your English is very understandable! 700grams really? Under one kilogram? That is very very tiny. In US measures that would be under 1lb. Usually in kilograms Yorkies run here from 1.5kilo to 3 kilos. Roughly from 3lbs to 7lbs.

We love pics here, so if you have time do upload one.

In terms of hair not growing, I would call and ask my vet about this. Do you know the history of her parents?

Hi, Welcome to YT.

I had a yorkie many years ago that would have "excitement pee pee" whenever guests came over. I never could break him of that.

According to the article I linked, excitement urination is a little different.
"If your dog urinates when he's playing or being greeted but doesn’t exhibit submissive postures, he has a different problem: excitement urination."

Here are the recommendations if the problem is submissive urination:

Quote:
Recommendations
First, take your dog to your veterinarian to rule out any medical reasons for the behavior.

Then, start building up his confidence with these steps:

Teach him commands using positive reinforcement training methods.
Keep his routine and environment as consistent as possible.
Gradually expose him to new people and new situations and try to ensure that his new experiences are positive and happy.
Keep greetings low-key (no bear hugs or loud voices, which your dog may perceive as acts of dominance).
Encourage and reward confident postures such as sitting or standing.
Give him an alternative to submissive behaviors. For example, have him "sit" or "shake" as you approach, and reward him for obeying.
Avoid approaching him with postures that he may interpret as dominant or confrontational. Avoid direct eye contact; look at his back or tail instead. Get down on his level by bending at the knees rather than leaning over from the waist. Ask others to approach him in the same way. Pet him under the chin rather than the top of his head. Approach him from the side, rather than head on, and/or present the side of your body to him.
Eliminate odors wherever your dog submissively urinates, especially if he isn't completely house-trained.
Don't punish or scold him for submissive urination. This will only make the problem worse.
If your dog is extremely fearful, ask your vet about medications that may help during the retraining process.
Above all, be patient. It will take time for your dog to gain confidence, but with you leading the way, he can overcome his fears and blossom into a happy, secure dog.

Excitement peeing does seem to be pretty common in female dogs. My ZoE would occasionally do this when she was younger if a friend of mine came into the house & talked to her in a very high pitched voice. It's almost like it was her cue to get all worked up & excited, and then she'd piddle on the floor.

Luckily I only had a couple of friends that used that high-pitched baby-talk kind of voice to greet her. I simply told them to stop doing it and to just calmly walk in & ignore her. Now when they come over, ZoE just sniffs at them as they walk by, waits for them to sit down and then climbs in their lap to be petted....no more peeing

It does sound like your dog may have a high stress level. Trembling as a regular thing is not normal. Tremling would be normal on rare occasions when the dog has had an actual scare. Fur not growing at all is also abnormal. Yes, I would get her to the vet and discuss these issues with the vet, including the abnormal urinating. She is very tiny and that would give me some real concerns about her health.
Historically the Yorkshire Terrier has been a very hardy breed but in the last few decades some questionable breeding practices have weakened the breed quite a bit. Some extra tiny Yorkies tend to be more prone to health problems.
Yorkies are high energy dogs but should not be nervous or be in constant motion. I hope your vet can do a detailed exam of your little darling to pinpoint any issues she may be having.

Hi all again, ans thanks a lot for all the info, and the welcoming :P

She really is very small and this is one of my concerns, I know they are very fragile and winter is coming (very col in here). She's obviously inside the house, in her bed, but I'm sure she needs the hair also lol

About the pee, I was reading the link and it's definitely "excitation pee" . But the pee and trembling only happens with visitors. And it's a "good trembling" lol I'm afraid I can't explain it, she's very very happy, going after my friends trembling and peeing. (the trembling is like if she's wagging her tail but all over the body and very, very fast - not the same as if she was cold or scared...) Other than that she's always jumping, playing, running... she only sleeps about 6 hours per day (normal?)...

About this I already went to the vet about a year ago, he did some exams and she's perfectly fine, so he told me that this happens some times in "hyperactive" dogs, especially females, dough it's not very common at this age (4), usually it stops at 2, the most. And he explained me that every visitor should ignore her, etc. But it doesn't work. I just got used to it, and when someone comes I grab the mop As long as she's healthy I'm happy, just thought you could give me some different "trick" , so I asked. But I've read one of you also has a Yorkie with this problem and didn't manage to solve it, I think that's my future xD

about the parents of my Yorkie (her name is Yani by the way :P), I know them both. the father never had any problem until 4, but then he in an accident but the mother is perfectly fine, around 10 years old, in perfect health.

My only concern right now is really about the hair, 'cuse I'm afraid it could be an health problem. But she looks and behaves totally fine...(eating, sleeping, pooping, peeing, jumping, etc... everything as usual)...
But I gess i really must take her to the vet.

Thanks again, and sorry for this "bible" but I was trying to answer all the questions Ah, about the photos, I cleaned my computer about a week ago, so right now I only have the one that I am using as an avatar, but as soon as I can I will post new ones... probably with very ugly hair
