| Need to cut hair on the paws? My 11 weeks yorkie lives inside the house (of course) and since the my house flooring using tiles, do i need to cut the hair on the paws? I found that the hair sometime make the paws are slippery and I often see him slipped during a run. If I need to groom it, anyone can tell me how? Thanks |

| Hi and Welcome to YT! I try to keep their feet trimmed for that very reason! I use a little mini clipper or I carefully trim it with scissors, just enough to make the hair level with the foot pads, or so that most of the pad is exposed.

| I just lay Tatum on her back in my lap after blowdrying her and use a little mini Wahl trimmer and buzz between the pads of her feet. I think she actually likes it. She also lets me trim her ears with the Wahl (and her hiney). Some dogs may not let you do all this though. We got lucky.

| It's good to start grooming early as possible to get them used to it, otherwise it will be difficult to do as they get older. I take my dog to the groomer, so that is a good option if you can't do it yourself. Since your dog is so young and probably has not received all his shots, he can't go to the groomer but if your vet does grooming then you can get it done there. Good Luck! |

Zachary's Mom Donating Member | The only fur I cut is the fur on the underside of their feet, between the toes. It is easy for a piece of cat litter to get stuck inbetween and I don't want that. I let the upper foot hair grow (if that makes sense). Louise and Zachary |

| While the dog is standing, I carefully scissor around the paw so that the hair level with the floor (counter), and I use a mustache trimmer on the bottom of foot, around the pads.

| I tried to cut the hair between his paws and he doesn't seem to like it. He struggled so much but I managed to cut it on his front legs. Tonight I will try to do it for his back leg. I can see he's not getting slipped anymore with clean paws. How do you use the mustache trimmer to do it?? |

I hold the paw in one hand and gently squeeze so that the pads spread a bit. Then I trim as much as possible with the mustache trimmer, angling it in between the pads. You don't have to jam the trimmer into the paw -- be gentle and go slow to get a feel for how much pressure is needed.

| I notice the little battery operated trimmers due well on noise levels. Less noise coming from it seems to have a more soothing effect. |

YT 1000 Club Member | I trim both my guys paws, but it's mainly because they get them wet a lot. Short helps dry them out, and they don't leave such a mess when we get back from the Bayou (they jump in after a Frog or Shake a lot too) Anyway, it's neater and their "traction" isn't inhibited by the longer hair. I have lifted the Hair just above their paws, trimmed the hair directly on them, and combed the longer hair back over, trimming it where it doesn't overhang.
