| Is there anything to worry about? I found my cat and Charlie in the backyard toying with a dead rat this morning. They had his stomach ripped open and were just having fun with it. (sorry for the detail) I managed to get it away from them and get rid of it, (it was gross) but should I worry about diseases. I know it is normal and that's what they will do if they see a mouse or rodent. So sorry if I sound like a worry wart. Just wondering. |

| If the rat had recently consumed rat poison, it causes bleeding and your pups would need to be treated quickly. |

| Well we don't have a huge rat problem so we don't have any poison out. I'm sure they're ok. The only thing I could think about was keeping them away in case it had a disease and trying to get a shovel and bag at the same time. And Charlie was running from me because he wanted to play with it and knew I didn't want him too. He finally let me get him and put him inside so I had time to get what I needed to clean it up. Why do they want to play with a dead rat! I know it's nature but YUCK!! |

| Was it a rat or a house mouse? I thought you said it was a rat. Can people on your property where a rat was apparently running about before it was killed get hantavirus from it?

| It was a large mouse. To me it looked to big to say mouse but to small for a rat. Maybe a baby rat. |

| Yikes! Well, it's dead and as long as it's not a rat, sounds like ya'll people there are at least safe from anything bug-y like hanta!!! And since terriers are natural ratters, your guys are performing true to breed. Bet the dogs are proud! My Scotty once killed a house mouse "for" me - and brought it to me dead - and headless!!! I had just had surgery but almost climbed the bedroom curtains getting away!

| Oh, I'll bet they were. Scotty strutted with his chest out for a week after he bagged his mouse. He was forever on mousehunt duty thereafter I was forever having the exterminator out! Sadly for Scotty, gladly for Mommie, it was his only time. There is nothing like seeing your dear, tiny little Yorkie with a dead mouse hanging from its mouth! Thought I might die of cardiac arrest right then and there! And it was no easy task to get him to "leave it"! But he was so proud!

| Rabies, lepto, lyme disease, toxins and various skin infections &I paracites. If you bag the mouse your vet can run a test on it to check before you worry about unnecessary treatments for your dog & cat. Here its like $15
