So first let me start by saying I had an appointment to get my Zoe spayed for this week. Last week she started licking her vulva excessively, to the point she was making it raw. I assumed she was coming in heat, but I was still concerned about the raw looking vulva so I took her to the vet. After spending $175. I found out she was indeed going in heat. The vet gave me an antiseptic powder to put on her vulva which did help. She hadn't started bleeding yet, but I still decided to buy a pack of diapers, just in case it was messier than I was hoping for, although in the back of my mind I figured she would never allow them on. The next morning when I woke up she had a couple blood spots soaked through her blankie on my bed so I gave the diapers a try. I am very happy to report she is fine with the diapers, doesn't mind them at all. Now for the question, she has been bleeding for 9 days and still is as of this morning. How long can I expect the bleeding to continue? From my research I thought about a week of bleeding, 1 week of more of a clear fluid. But she is still all blood. Am I just being a reactionary momma, or should she go see her friendly vet again? And just in case you are wondering, I never let her out without me and without being on a leash. I have no intentions of breeding my little baby. In fact when I discovered she was in heat I came home and cried. I just didn't want that for my little girl. I did put off the spay surgery as the vet said it is riskier to do while they are in heat and I should wait about 2 months so she now has an appointment for the first of November. I just feel so sorry for her having to be in diapers and the fact that she is more clingy and much more tired lets me know she isn't feeling 100%. And advise on what to expect from here is much appreciated.

I have no advise for you, I have a boy. Sounds like you are trying to do your best for her and that is all you can do. Just keep an eye on that girl at all times and do not let her come in contact with ANY male! Hopefully her heat will fly by with no problems and you are able to get things back to normal!

21 days. One week coming in, one week in, and one week coming out. Its always how luck has it you schedule the spay and they go in heat

Ughhhh poor girl, that means she isn't even 1/2 way there. It sounds like I better purchase more of those crazy diapers.

Gracie was just under 4lbs when she had her first heat. I hardly noticed the bleeding. She kept herself very clean. I was concerned that if I put diapers on her that it would mess up her potty training so I had pads all over the furniture she would normally get on and on the bed. No, she didn't pee on them. She was very accustomed to going potty on the pee pads in the frames. Gracie actually bled for about 2 weeks. The scent that a male dog can smell is still in their urine and on their bodies even when the bleeding stops so keep her protected whenever she is outside. Don't be surprised if you find some male dogs wandering in your yard if she potties out there.

Isn't that the truth...got two surprise oops litters that way...and it helps if other people are not as meticulous as you are keeping the girls out of 'harm's' way.

There will be no surprises with Zoe. Some would call me an overprotective momma, I would never let her out unsupervised even when not in heat. I just feel bad she has to go through this. She is doing very well in her diaper, I just take it off at her normal potty times and she pees just like always. I also take her for a walk every morning and evening and always take her diaper off for that. I don't want to embarrass her.

You wouldn't want to embarrass your baby!

Sounds like you are doing everything right... You are an excellent momma and as long as you continue doing what you are doing, she will be fine.

I waited to spay my tiny girl (3.8 pounds) until she was 8 months because I was so worried. I think I got lucky that she didn't go into heat before her spay.

LOL...Yep...I said the same thing...no surprises!

Problem was...I wasn't the only person with the ability to 'protect' my girls or 'allow' anything to go wrong...and it did...when I was not around and others...were...!

Fortunately I get to spend all my time with my baby. I am a project manager and work out of my home except when I have to travel to a client site and then my bf watches my baby and he is more uptight about her than I am. For example...she moves in the night and he wakes me up to see if she needs a drink or needs to go pee pee, he insists I cut her kibble into smaller pieces so one by one each kibble gets cut in half every single day, he always worries about her hair bow being in too tight, ect ect. While its true I am a hyper momma, he drives me crazy with her. So I am confident she won't be having any babies and that's a very good thing. I prefer to leave the breeding to the professionals. I can't imagine how I would worry if she ended up pregnant.

Remy had one heat before she was spay. I waited because of her size and also the heat kinda snuck up on me...I alway had boys before.

I have read it is good to let them have one heat, idk if that is true or not?

I think it's better that she is being spayed later after her growth plates close. I would be careful walking her, and I think I might be afraid to because of people who let their dogs off lead. I read that it's best to walk them away from their home, so that the scent doesn't lead any males to your house. Your little girl can be spayed two months after her heat, and she will do fine. I think the length varies, especially during a first heat. I was just recently at the vet with Katie, and someone brought her Bichon in because she was in heat for a month. I didn't think that was very unusual until I saw that she was still bleeding after all of that time. Good luck with Zoey, and when the time comes, I hope she does well when you get her spayed.

If memory serves me the first heat Princess wore diapers for 5the days and 7-10the after that.

Princess is a mini schnauzer not sure if it makes a diff between breeds.

I swear one geat she spotted then atopped then started 2the days later again but she nay have just "cleaned" herself and I thought sge wasn't bleeding.
