| Warning about House Guests and pills I know summer is winding down but I just had an experience that could have been deadly for Lola so I thought I would pass on. I had 5 out of town guests for several days. We worried about the normal things like open doors, stepping on her, over treating but I never thought of a prescription sleeping pill called LUNESTA winding up right next to one of her beds. My office has a day bed and we had it pulled out for the guests. Lola also has her Minnie Mouse bed in here as well, and spends a lot of time in it. The guests left on Monday morning, about an hour ago I see something very small peaking out from her under the bed, I thought it was a tiny piece from a toy, but when I picked it up I could tell it was a prescription pill. I called the adult guest that had been sleeping in the room and found out it was Lunesta, either she dropped it on the floor or perhaps it was in the bed and I shook it loose when I stripped the sheets after they left. I thought I had cleaned up pretty well, but missed this. I am lucky that Lola did not chew it up as you know many dogs will. Had she gotten ill I would not have had a clue what happened because I had not even thought about the various pills my guests were taking. I don't take any pills on a regular basis so I don't think about stuff like this happening, but it seems like more than 50% of the people I know are on something so I will rethink how I approach guests and their pills from now on.

| Oh wow! That is very scary. I think mine is one that would have gobbled it up. We had an incident once, where family members "thought" they gave their dog their ACE for their travel home. About 30 minutes after they left I realized my Mylee was very very groggy. I am positive their dog didn't get their meds and my Mylee did. Thank goodness their dogs are in the 10-20 lb range and it was a low dose for them, but enough to make Mylee extra groggy. Your warning is a good one to be vigilant about.

| Great reminder! I am always so obsessed with my grandparents and there medicine that I don't think about guests. I am seriously crazy about it with my grandparents though sometimes I think they want to kill me lol. Glad she didn't find it and eat it.

| Yes this is very scary. This is something that really hit's my heart hard. I lost my beautiful Shayleigh in 2003 due my Mother In Law and one of her pills. We were staying there for few months. My MIL was on Blood Thinner medication and she dropped one on the floor and Shayleigh got hold it. We had no idea at the time what Shay's problem was. While she was at hospital , I went back to the house and searched high and low for what she could have gotten into and we found another pill on the floor. The Vet Specialist and I did everything we could to save her. But in the end she bleed out in her brain. My Sweet Shayleigh was only 2 1/2 yrs old. To this I fear pills so much.

| This always terrifies me! I dont have a lot of guests, as my life style is not very conducive to having guests, ie, I work and when I get off work, all my time is devoted to the dogs....I dont really have time to visit with guests! You have to be VERY careful of people and their PURSES!!! Any tobacco product, any sugar free product, any kind of prescription meds....any of these items can make your precious baby deathly ill, or even kill them. Dont forget contact lenses and even false teeth or those bite blocks that people use to keep them from grinding their teeth at night! There was a time when I used to have house guests...this is sooooo easy a way to end up with a seriously ill baby, so unintentionally, yet so lethal....looking back and now listening to this story, I am sooo happy I am no longer faced with this issue! I have my brother that comes about twice a year...no dogs are ever allowed in that part of the house, so that is not an issue..he KNOWS no medicine of any kind, actually nothing that goes in your mouth, is allowed in the sunroom/den/kitchen area of the house, where the babies run freely. We try to think of every single thing that can possibly cause a problem for our dogs, and as hard as we try, something can always get past us! |
