| Thunderstorm Cinders went through her 1st storm here. When it began, I could hear the drops starting to hit. She jumped up, and sat close to me on the edge of her bed looking around to try to see where the rain drop sounds were coming from. It took me a few seconds to realize that she was hearing the rain drops and trying to see them. She started barking at the rain...Ok, squeeking at it in her toughest squeek. Then, the 1st big lightning flashed, with the really loud house shaking thunder right after...she flew off the bed and ran under my computer chair just when I thought she was being so brave protecting me from the rain drops... |

| Just let her know that it's ok. If you don't make a big deal and don't be panicky then hopefully she won't develop a fear of storms. Its very sad to watch your baby so afraid of something! Sounds sooo cute though, her reaction to the rain! hehe My boys bark their heads off at thunder. Then again, anything in the sky gets them going, airplanes, helicopters, birds, thunder.... they just bark & bark at it!

| Woof!! Most of my baby's are good with all but the loudest of thunder, but one is especially nervous... so I give her something to do! I walk around the house dropping kibble! She follows, and hunts, and races the other dogs to the kibble!! Doesn't work in the night... I hate to get up!

| Brandi is really weird during thunderstorms. Sometimes they don't bother her at all. She will sleep right through them. Other times she will be so scared she will jump in the shower with me. I haven't figure it out yet as to why sometimes she is scared and other times she is not. Who knows what goes on in the silly little heads. |

| I have four Yorkies, the ones I raised from a puppy don't pay too much attention to a storm. Sometimes they will look at me if the house shakes, to see if I am afraid then go back to their nap or whatever. But Gracie was a rescue and she was left out on a deck during a storm. She used to be terrified, panting, screaming, wild eyed with panic and even snapping at me. Now she retreats to my lap, or her crate and waits the storm out. It has taken years of, love, patience and behavior modification. Some dogs are very sensitive to changes in the weather and can sense a coming storm. The best thing you can do is be a good leader. Stay calm. It is ok to create a ritual that makes your dog feel safe. Using a Thunder shirt helps some. For Gracie, I tour the house and close (check) doors and window, close the drapes, light candles and turn off the TV, computer etc. I wrap her in her baby blanket and tuck her next to me while I read a book. Sometimes if it is a very loud storm, she retreats to her crate with her pink baby and blanket.

| Callie was terribly afraid of thunderstorms so one summer I bought a thundershirt for her and we used it all summer for storms and then after that we had a storm where I forgot to put it on her and she did amazing with out it. The thundershirt like cured her but I still have to use it for fireworks. Maybe if she keeps being afraid of the thunderstorms you might want to try it.

| My Milo gets nervous. He has just started this. The other day he started panting like crazy and shaking. It was in the morning and I had the blinds closed so I opened them for him to see. He was going crazy because he couldn't see out. I put his shirt on and he finally settled down. I felt so sorry for him. Last week it came a storm in the night and he woke up and started shaking but he didn't do the panting thing. He just laid back down and went to sleep.

| I used to have a Shih Tzu who was terribly afraid of thunder and loud noises. It was really hard to deal with and I always felt terrible when I was away from home and there was a storm because I knew how afraid he would be. With Gracie I decided I would give her no reason to be afraid of anything. When a thunder storm or high winds come I pretend I do not notice. If there is a loud crack of thunder I make no comment and make sure that anyone here acts as though nothing is happening. If I have to close windows I go about it slowly and speak in a normal tone of voice. When there is a loud crack of thunder Gracie will look at me and I just continue what I am doing. I do not even say comforting words. To do so would just reenforce her idea that something may be wrong. So far so good. She does not come to me or act scared at all. She will occasionally look at me to see if I will react and when I don't she just goes back to what she was doing. When you think of it you know dogs are very smart. If a person hears a loud noise and sits up and says, " Wow! that was close!" the dog is going to pick up on the person's surprise or alarm. Right away they know this is something to be concerned about. Remember how sensitive dogs are to your emotions and keep calm and quiet so they will, too. |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Roxy was about 2 yo or so before she really started getting upset about thunder & other loud noises. Got her a Thundershirt several months ago, which has helped a LOT! Now when she senses a storm coming, she'll come get me and go sit where we keep her thundershirt and waits for me to put it on her. She's fine after that. I've always remained calm during storms (no problem cuz I'm a storm watcher) and think that helps a lot. During fireworks season we can often see them through the trees here. I go out with her and we watch them together... oooo & ahhhh about them. When the storms started bothering her I was surprised, but it seems like any loud noises make her uncomfortable. When we watch people put their boats in the lake, she will get down & sit on the floor of the car. Very unusual for her. When you think yours has stopped growing, you might want to invest in a Thundershirt. Good luck!

| Aw Cinders, such a brave girl. My Heidi cracks me up. The first couple of times it thunders she will have a long, low growl like she's warning it better stop it. Then after that if it thunders real loud she'll jump off the couch barking like she is going to rip it apart. And obviously, it ignores her so she's like, "Oh well" and goes back to sleep. LoL If its a sudden lightning strike boom she'll jump over to me and look at me like she's saying, "Should I be afraid or not?" It always makes me laugh.

| Yeah, dogs reactions can be fun to see. They are smart, and pick up sooo many things from their humans. Too bad they can do housework! If Cinders does more than bark back at it, I'll invest in a thunder shirt. So far, that's all she done. There were fireworks last weekend and she didnt even notice, I hope that continues as well. |
