| An aging furbaby is hard to watch because we remember when they were so busy. Our big guy,2bits, lived to be 15 1/2. He was our protector, babysitter and puppy trainer. He was such a big part of our lives that when he became unable to do what he normally did,we figured that it was our turn to care for him. His weight went from 70lbs to 50lbs over a 2yr period. In his last days, the child that he kept from escaping from my house as a toddler that was only 6months older than he,began caring for him by carrying him outside, taking his food and water to him because he could not get up easially, and making sure that he got his meds twice a day. There were many things about 2bits becoming old and unable that were tuff, but there were so many sweet things that came from that time as well. I dont have any advice for you about your babys dental needs. I hope that his annual vet visit will go well and your vet will have some helpful advice. Blessings to you and your baby. |

| Is it possible that his dental issues are affecting him? Infected teeth can cause a whole myriad of health problems. Hopefully there will be a way of dealing with infected teeth if you are not able to put him under anesthesia. Wish you the best.

| My Presley just turned 16 a week ago. For the past year, I've noticed a lot of slowing down in him. Though somedays, you'd still think he was a puppy. I think he has a little nightblindness as he is scared to go down the steps from the bed at night, so usually he'll bark and I'll let him down to do what he needs to do. Sometimes he comes back up by himself, but sometimes he barks and waits for me to get him back up. He hasn't bumped into the walls as of yet. We think his hearing is a bit less, but still pretty good. He is more demanding in his old age though. He does go outside ALOT, but so far no accidents. He does sleep alot during the day. But, when I come home he's pretty active. He is more vocal. Unfortunately at around 2:30 a.m. He just wakes up and wants off the bed and starts barking until one of us gets up for about 15 minutes to figure out whats going on...then he gets back into bed. He has good days and bad days. You can tell because he's not interested in treats or eating and kind of mopes around. But, then the next day, he back to being himself. Luckily he has more good days then bad. He hasn't lost any teeth as of yet, which surprises our vet. They still seem to be good. Little bit of tartar... Its stressful for us when they get this age. You just never know whats going to happen. You question everything they do that seems out of the ordinary. Is he whining for attention or is he in pain. Every year he gets older I just pray for us to make it through the next year as healthy as we can. |

Try nightlights. I the dusk to dawn nightlights leading down the stairs. Brandi doesn't like going to potty at night by herself so I put in nightlights that lead to her potty pads. | |

| Yeah, we have 4 in different locations between when he jumps down and the bathroom. Sometimes I think he is having bad joint days more, which he takes supplements for. Sometimes I try to avert issues, cause when I have to potty I pick him up and take him with me. We potty together. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Aww Im sorry it is so hard to see them aging. My aunt had a yorkie that lived 24 years and a maltiese that lived 22 so I grew up with them and also watched them grow old and I was so sad when they passed but because of knowing them is what made me fall in love with this breed. cherish the memories you could still have many years left. It also could be to changing weather I know that would slow her dogs down for a bit. Then when it warmed up again they seemed to perk up a bit Hope all goes well for your furbabys

| My Yorkie, Ashley passed away a month before her seventeenth birthday. She was still fairly active, and we walked at least two miles a day. She had a tooth infection at the age of sixteen, and although it was risky because of her enlarged heart, she did so much better after the surgery. She also suffered from dementia the last year of her life, and that made her pace and get lost in corners. We put her on Anipryl, and it helped ease her anxiety and made her feel so much better. Still, she was a happy little girl despite all of the problems. I asked her doctor to let me know at any time he felt her we were being selfish by wanting to keep her with us for as long as we could. He told me that she was so responsive and loving with me, and that it wasn't something I needed to worry about. I really believe the dental surgery eased some of the anxiety that Ashley was feeling, and it also was better for her overall health. I also think her long walks helped to keep her heart and her lungs strong, her mind mentally stimulated, they eased her anxiety, and made Ashley happier. If it is Myles' kidneys, there might be something that could help that like a special diet or subq fluids. I'm so sorry that Myles isn't feeling like himself. I know how difficult that it is to bear. We love our little ones so much, and it's so hard to see them age. Each day with them is so precious, and we need to cherish every moment.

| It is hard to wath them age. It sounds like your pup is in need if a vet check. HeRt murmurs are not uncommon in older yorkies. Kidney problems do come up sometimes, but there are things that can be done to make it a bit better. A pup with kidney problems not being treated is going to feel terrible. ..if that is even the problem.. Bloodwork and a urinalysis is needed. What if it is as simple as a UTI... Whether or not anesthesia is safe would be the vet's call, but bad teeth can cause major problems.

| Mine are aging too and although they haven't slowed down yet, the are nearing the end of their natural life spans which makes me very sad. I live each day to the fullest with them. I agree that you should get that mouth looked at -- my Barney had to undergo two orthopedic surgeries and a dental procedure all within a 4 month period and he just turned 12. I had a cardiac assessment done first to make sure his little heart could take it and to help the vets choose the right protocol for him. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I'm sorry your baby is slowing down, but that's the inevitable fact we all will face and it just stinks. Hugs!

| My yorkie, Kecia, died 2 months ago just shy of her 17th birthday. She was so healthy her entire life but then at age 15 I suddenly noticed she had lost her hearing and within the year she was completely blind. It started out just at night and within 6 months she was totally blind. She also would have way more accidents so I bought doggy diapers and used those on her when I knew I wasn't able to watch her closely. I spent her last 2 years taking care of her every basic need but I did so without any thought. I knew she was not in any pain, it was more work for me but I did not care one bit. I was her eyes and ears for those last two years. I would take her to her water and food and even hand feed her. I gave her more cuddles and kisses and I constantly held her and masssaged her which she loved. This is one reason why I love yorkies, if Kecia was 50lbs instead of 4lbs I would probably have had to put her down because I wouldn't be able to pack her everywhere. I had hopes that she would just pass away peacefully in her sleep but that did not happen. One Sunday late afternoon she suddenly had a seizure and then continued to have them every 20 minutes. I quickly called the vets after her 4th one and we made the decision that it was time. I has crying the entire way there and held her when they they administered her "sleeping" watched as she took her last breath and went limp. I wasn't ready to have her go but I did not want her to suffer. She meant the world to me and I swore I'd never get another dog again as it was just too darn hard! However I was an emotional wreck in the days that followed and my life just seemed so empty without a dog so a week later I adopted another yorkie, Pippa, and she was the best "medicine" I could ever have. I still think of Keci daily but in a good way as Pippa reminds me so much of her. My only advice to you is to shower as much love as you can on your baby and make their remaining days as comfortable as possible with lots of love and cuddles. When Kecia started to go down fast at age 15 I thought we would lose her within months but she ended up living another 2 years and I'm sure that was because all the love and attention I gave her. I have a 2 toddlers at home so it was hard to balance it all but I did and I'm so happy I did! |
