| puppy biting butt My puppy is 14 weeks old. For a couple days she has been biting or trying to scratch something in her butt area. She can`t reach it so she whines. Has anyone had this problem? Just asking. She goes to the vet tomorrow for a shot anyway so will let her know about it. Trinket and I thank you for your replies. |

| Have you got back there and looked at it? Sometimes it's just a little dried poop.

| Not to freak you out, but it could be parasites. Take a "fresh" stool sample when you take her to the vet. Another possible problem--her anal gland might be full? I don't even know if that is possible in such a young pup, but it wouldn't hurt to ask your vet. |

| Or it could be worms? I believe they're very tickly, and if they're 'inside' her, she wouldn't be able to get to them..... Or maybe her anal glands need expressing? A dangly bit of poop sounds like the nicest option.... Sally + Harry x |

| Jada was doing this very same thing for the last few days. No fleas, no skin irritation or anything I could see. I took her in yesterday and it was her anal glands. She had never had any problems before and never had them expressed. Both glands were full and one was stopped up. My vet was able to express both sides and it was awful at the amount of stuff that came out It may not be anal glands as your puppy is still young, your vet will most likely test for parasites as well.

| She has had 4 wormings. The vet checked her last time and nothing showed up, but she wormed her anyway. There is no poop on her butt, but I did find a matted spot, probably from that. She will have a good combing and brushing before her bath today. I brush her twice a day. Could be her glands maybe. I held a wipe on her butt and she settled down. She really liked that. No alcohol kind of course. I have moved her legs and hips around and she didn`t cry, so hopefully she didn`t hurt herself. She doesn`t have the run of the house. Will let you know what the vet says tomorrow morning. Thanks all for your help. |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | You need to keep their little bottoms clean and free of any matting. Belive me I learned that the hard way.... its not pretty! Every now and than one of mine will crowd around my feet and want to be near me at all times. That when I know there is a problem down below and time for a cleaning. They can get the poo bound up in the hair and cant go potty. ITs quit disgusting but can be prevented with normal grooming and trimming the butt hairs.

| Has she had any trouble pooing? Like struggling to get it out? Sometimes if they have swallowed something they shouldn't have they can have problems trying to get it out. Hopefully, the vet can get a good look. Poor baby. It so awful when they can't tell us what is bothering them. Gracie somehow got part of a string inside her and she had an awful time getting it out. With a little assistance she finally got it out. I don't know how she finds these things. |

| Update. I got the little matting off her hair. She has stopped biting at herself, so I guess that was the problem, but going to tell the vet anyway. I wish she could go to the groomers but she is too young. Getting her last shot tomorrow I think. Then we wait a month? She is so active I m afraid to trim her hair. |

| Follow up from the vet. It was her anal glands. Vet said she is not too young for this to happen. At 14 weeks she weighs 2.8 pounds. She told me to make sure she gives her all the injections because she is so small. Thanks to all for your help and advice. Trinket says thanks also. |

| See if you can find a groomer that offers puppy grooming. They don't actually groom the puppy. Just trim them up in the important areas, clip nails, and get them introduced to the grooming process so when she does go for her first groom, she isn't completely freaked out! lol

| I guess I don't understand what your last post said. Your vet wants to give her all her shots because she is so small? |
