Default Why does this happen?

If this posts twice; I apologize, I had to leave my computer for a few minutes and I think I got kicked off.

I have two fur babies 10 and 8 mos old. I am still trying to get them potty trained. We work all day so they are crated and do not go in their crates. I immediately take them out for 20 mins or so and let them do their thing. I then either put them in their ex pen, or roam free while I try to watch them. It never fails, they will pee in their ex pen or the floor. I don't understand how they will go all day without peeing and then pee in the ex pen. I take them out almost on every hour but they just won't hold it until I get I take them out again. I know it takes time to get them both trained but I don't know if I am doing something wrong.. They are both fixed and have calmed down quite a bit, but this is the one thing that I just can't get solved. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have had a pomerian in the past and don't recall having this much problems with him getting trained.

Just give it time as your babies are very young still. Compare them to human babies at this age, they are still only infants & still in diapers. Be persistant, keep taking them out & while they are in the act of poo/pee tell them good girl/boy go potty outside. They will associate the words when you say lets go outside & go potty. Before you know it will all be a thing of the past. Also never let them have free run of the house unless you can be there to watch them.

You are just going to have to leave them outside until they pee there, however long it takes. The 20 minutes is too easy for them to hold it. In their minds, for some reason, they have the idea the x-pen or inside the house is the place to go. You have got to change that and the ONLY way to do it is wait them out outside - stay there until they do. Period. Over time, they will start to go outside sooner and sooner as they get comfortable going outside. Eventually they will prefer to go outside, as that is the natural place for a dog to go and they love to leave their scent out there for the world to get to smell!!! After a while, outside potty dogs usually go first thing as soon as they are let outside.

So, take your patient pill after you get home and sit outside with them until they go. Then praise each one and give him a little treat and bring them in. Watch them like hawks and be prepared to stop them with a "no" or "uh oh" should they immediately go to their pee spot in the x-pen or floor and try to go again as they think that is what they are supposed to do, so even though the finally went outside, they still will think the place to "go" is inside and will keep trying it for a while as you teach them that is not the thing to do. So be prepared to watch them very closely and if they squat, say "no", scoop them up and take them outside without any anger or upset as they are mixed up about where they should go and upset by you will just confuse them. They won't really need to "go" again when you rush them outside but by taking them out again, you have sent a message that squatting to "go" is only to be done outside and if they try it indoors, they get a "no", and rushed outside and put in the place they have peed/pottied. In time, they will "get it" and begin to understand trying to go inside makes you say "no" and they don't get to actually go there so they will stop trying to eventually.

Once a dog gets it into its head it can wait you out when outdoors and that in only 20 mins., it will get to go inside where for some reason it thinks it should go, all you can do it wait with it outside until it absolutely HAS to go and does go. Then it gets a nice praise and a treat and a "no" should it try to go inside and immediately taken out again. Eventually it will get the right idea and get with the program - go potty outside right after taken out and don't try it in the house and momma will be happy with me! And you will!

A dog that has been holding their urine for a long time. (sounds like a really long time for these young pups) have a back load of urine to get rid of. Even if they do pee once they more than likely will need to go several times for the next hour or so. Taking them out and walking them for at least 20 minutes may help. The smells they find along the way may encourage them to pee more and the activity will also get the body functions working.

Your pups are doing exceptionally well since they are not peeing in their crates but they need exercise. If they are kept in crates all day while you are at work and all night while you sleep they need much more than to be let outside for a while.

Yep, I agree with everyone else's advice with staying outside with them no matter how long it takes.

When we were housebreaking Toki, my boyfriend would take her outside for a minute, bring her back inside, proclaim that she indeed did not need to use the bathroom, and then watch her squat right by our front door on the carpet.

I spent a TON of time walking Toki around our yard and sitting in the grass waiting with a treat in hand...sometimes this process was 45 minutes or longer. I don't know if she just needed to relax being outside or what. We had the most opportunity for success taking her out in the mornings when she woke up and after meals (we knew that she'd need to use the bathroom and that we'd be able to reward/praise her with treats and happy dances to reinforce her behavior). Good luck! Potty training is definitely not something that I miss But your pups will pick it up eventually!

I'm just curious if you also hold your bathroom "ness" as much as and as long as you expect these dogs to?
