| canned food question We just adopted a 10 year old yorkie. He didn't seem to be eating dry food well and is a little under weight. I started adding water to the dry and for a couple days he ate much better. Today he is not eating well. Is it normal for them to have days where they don't eat well as others? And I'm thinking about trying canned. Is it bad for their teeth? |

| Congratulations on your new family member He's a senior so he might have trouble with kibbles if he has any dental issues. Have you had the vet take a look yet? In the meantime, giving him canned food would probably be a good idea, since he's underweight. You really don't want him losing any more. If his teeth check out fine, you can always try a different brand of kibble to see if he prefers another flavor. To entice him to eat it, mix a spoonful of the canned with it and perhaps a touch of warm water to make a gravy. Good luck, and thank you for giving this little senior a loving home!!!

Mine get canned and kibble mixed together. I just love the senior babies. I have adopted several seniors.

| I agree. Soft food is bad for teeth especially in small dogs who are prone to tooth decay. A little mixed in with dry kibble can encourage them to eat.

| Thanks for all the advice. He is up to date on everything and had teeth cleaned in October...I really was worried adopting an older dog because it will hurt to lose him. But I pray his has many years left |

| I have pups on only canned food. It is not true that kibble cleans teeth. Nothing they eat is going to change things if they are prone to periodontal disease. It is simply going to happen and dentals should be done. It is always good to brush their teeth daily.

| October was a while ago. If he has a bad tooth or an abcess, that could have showed up since then. If he was eating the kibble and now suddenly is not, it could be his teeth. Yorkies are notorious for having dental issues, and the older they get the worse it can get. Does he get any kind of crunchy treat/biscuits? If he does and eats those well, then it's probably not his teeth, just His Highness demanding better cuisine We would love to see pics of your little cutie. I just love the older dogs and would adopt some if I could financially handle their needs. They are just so sweet

| Has he had his teeth checked by the vet? He may not be wanting to eat because of bath teeth. You could give him just can food or mix canned with dry food. There are days Callie is not really hungry at all.

| I have a senior lady, as well as a little man....I have started mixing a tablespoon of canned in with their softened with warm water kibble, like a special treat...they have improved appetites and have stopped loosing weight....they have some teeth missing, and sometimes, I think it is just a big effort for them to chew that hard kibble up...so they dont. I dont like giving strictly canned...dont like the effect on stools....but they didnt like the kibble softened....so I mixed just a little canned in with it like gravy and they love it...not enough canned to adversly affect stools.... |

My Yorkies will eat their kibble (FROMM Chicken a la Veg) plain but I do give them a topper (Honest Kitchen Force) or steamed veggies since I give it to the Golden to mask the taste of his supplements. I do water the topper down.
