| Who has flown with their Yorkie? Hi all, I am going to Alaska (my home) for a month to get married. I am leaving in about two weeks. I am still on the fence about taking my boy, Bowser, with me. If I fly with him,it's going to cost me about 450 in airfare round trip. However, he would have a blast on vacation with me and I would really like him to be my ring bearer. His caretaker just informed me she is going on vacation and her boyfriend will watch Bowser for the last portion of the trip, which I am honestly not comfortable with. Anyway, I wanted to know if anyone had experiences, tips, or opinions about travelling with your pet in cabin? Also, can someone please recommend a good kennel for me? His is too big. He is very good about new places and car rides, and normally very good about being in his kennel. My concern is that it is a LONG travel time, 21 hours. It's a 5 hour flight, a 3 hour flight, then a 6 hour flight. There are about 3 hours in between flights and I am fairly confident all my airports have pet relief areas. I will talk to the vet, but what do you think about sedative? For maybe just the last portion of the flight? I am just worried he will get restless/upset at being stuck in his kennel for so long. |

| We fly a lot. There are a few things to consider. Be sure you have had the carrier you are going to use around for a while and he had played in it, had treats in it and been take places in it, so hs is comfortable with it. Next thing you need to know is that some airlines have a weight limit for a dog in the cabin. They will also say the dog needs to be able to get up and turn around in the carrier - that is to know the carrier is not too small for the dog. The breaks between flight are good. They get to walk around and go to potty. Sometimes the dog walk Area is a long walk in some terminals and you will have to go back through the TSA inspection again, so time yourself accordingly. Getting something from the vet may be a good idea. On long flights I sometimes ration the water so she does not get restless to potty a - our last flight was 12 hours - I wAtch my fluid intake also, because I would not leave her to go to the lavatory - I just take her with me but she does not like the lavatory because it is loud and tiny. Take extra blankets incase he does have any accidents or gets cold. Have a great trip. PS. Cali has been a ring bearer three times! She loved all of that attention!

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I have flown, but only once, although it was about a 2000mile trip, broke up in two parts. I used a purse carrier, it was very handy, as I put in to the carrier all of "our" travel documents, my wallet, passport, et al. Along with a small emergency kit. I also bought bottle water after the security check in and was able to take the water with me on the plane. Be prepared to remove your dog from the carrier, then you and he walk through the security gizmos together. Then you place him back in the carrier when you clear security. I used two disposable wee pads in the bottom of his purse carrier, and I took him to the washroom and laid down one pee pad for him to weewee on. Of course he didn't, I merely folded it up, and placed it back in the bag. I loved my purse carrier, as I snuck him in lots to restaurants; how-ever I would have liked a hard sided crate once I was at my destination. In fact I acutally bought one. He was being shown, and also it was a tad roomier to put him in, when I had to leave him for short periods of time in the room. I also carried a lock with me, to lock him into his crate. I absolutely adore the fact I can travel with my dog on a plane. But it does require some logisitics once you arrive at your destination. How-ever by the sounds of it; you will have lots of help, and a secure and safe place for your puppy to stay, when you do need to go out and about. Enjoy your trip....

| I have flown with Layla- the flight was about 3 hours. Take a look at this website- Dog Jaunt : Traveling with a small dog. They have great info on flying. I would NOT do a sedative. you don't want to be up in the air and having him have a reaction. That would be awful. The best thing you can do is give him a good, long walk before you go. Layla slept the whole time. I kept giving her treats here and there to let her know she was ok. These are the BEST bags. SturdiBag? large by Sturdi Products | Sturdi Products I ordered 3 other bags before settling on this (didn't want to spend the money- but you kow the saying- you get what you pay for!) bag. It is wonderful. The top is not hard so it can squish under the seats. Do you best on your lay overs to walk him and get him to eat. You might want to line the bottom of the bag with a pee pad and bring extras with you- that way if needs to go you can bring him to the bathroom on the plane or in the airport and let him go on the pad. be sure to have great treats with you to get him back in the bag when you need to. Try to bring a blanket if you can to wrap around his bag- sometimes the floors of airplanes are VERY cold. I hope he gets to go! I'm sure he will surprise you with just how good he is on the plane! Be sure to get him used to his bad before you go. |

| Thank you everyone! I did read those two blogs and some other posts on the forum, however the majority of things seems to be very short trips, whereas mine is 21/22 hours or so. I just worry, but I think it's worth taking him. |

| I have flown with Strudel extensively, I say bring him if he can ride in the cabin with you! Strudel and I have had some awesome trips where the attendant will let me take him out of the carrier and hold him, but even when we have to follow the rules he has been perfectly fine as long as he can see me. As another poster said - familiarize him with his travel carrier before the trip. Bring the sedative with you as a last resort, but I've never had to use one, not even on very long 6-8hr trips. I try to feed and #2 potty him way before we leave, this lessens any restlessness. I also have the biggest carrier allowable even though he is just 3.5 pounds, and sometimes I can see and hear him playing when we are in the air

| Sophie Kate has traveled by plane with us a few times, always in the cabin under the seat. I also always try to get her to potty before we go in the airport and only give her food and water if I feel it is really necessary. Most airports have an area to exercise your dog, make sure you research your layover airports (Atlanta airport has a small dog park very close to ground transportation, very nice but a little loud). Also most the times I get a really nice Flight Attendant who will let me take her out of the bag once we take off.

| Don't worry, it's not a 21 hr light it's a 5hr and a 3hr and a 6hr flight, see just little short ones. Your gonna be able to take breaks, get up and walk around, play a little, eat, visit, etc. You know the drill. don't worry. You've all ready found dog jaunt, one of the best web sites for the take along junk and info on the planes them selves. Here on YT in the travel section are some good postings on what to do and what NOT to do. But mostly, don't stress, have fun. After all that's what this is supposed to be about right? And leaving your little one behind only creates stress, you worrying about what's going on. I have posted about the traveling before and we will travel by plane again, even though I hate to fly, and the TSA guys are idiots, at least some are, , you know what I mean. Biggest tip I can give you is don't stress and arrive at the airport early, oh, sorry that's two. ALSO, have fun.

| Just a quick note on the sedative. If you do decide to use one, PLEASE try it on your baby at home once and watch for any reactions. I'd hate to think of you up in the air or in a strange airport with a sick little baby Enjoy your trip!!!
