Default Hi New here and have a question

Hi my name is Claudean and live I Greenbrier, Tn., I found a 4 1/2 year old yorkie on Craigslist last Sunday and drove 1 1/2 hours to meet Bella Rose and of course I brought her home with me. The lady was asking $100.00 for her. She said she had 3 other yorkies, 2 cats and 3 kids and had to downsize. She just had her spade last Thursday and this was what the $100.00 was for was to help cover expenses. She is AKC registered and 100% housebroke, has all her shots and brought all papers with her. Bella is so loving and sweet and has 100% of my heart . I am 63 and live in an apartment and have to walk 2 buildings down to take her to potty in the puppy area which is fine for now. My question is do you think I could pad break her to potty on a pad inside for this winter when there is ice and snow. I don't do ice and snow very well and have been worring about what I am going to do. Can somebody help me with how to do this if it is possible.
I am so glad to have found Yorkie Talk and have spent hours on her already.

First welcome to Yorkietalk! Second, congrats on your baby! Can't wait to see pictures. . When I got Rosie she was 6 months old and had been going outside to potty. I tried puppy pads but nothing worked for me. Then I got Mikki. Mikki is both pad trained and outside trained. Once Rosie saw Mikki using the pad, she will use it now too. She don't use it all the time. Just in emergencies! . I wish I could give you some training advice. But I really don't know how to get them to go pad only. Good luck!

Welcome to YT Claudean! Congratulations on the new little addition to your life, Bella Rose.

My younger boy was 8 months old when we brought him home and he was outdoor trained. We had the same reasons you have for wanting to pad train him. Like BabyGirl Rosie, we benefited from having another dog in the house to help training. However, it is still possible that you can train Bella Rose.

I use pads infused with a scent to attract the doggies. Limit the dog's freedom to a smallish area with the pad and where you can supervise. Show her the pad and start using keywords to indicate to go potty there. When she does, praise her profusely and give her a small treat. Repetition and consistency and praise are key.

I do want to caution you that this is probably going to be a bigger challenge to train for this when the pad is not a consistent part of life -- if the pad comes and goes depending on the weather. She may get confused that sometimes she is allowed to potty indoors and sometimes she isn't. Some people who have done it successfully use their garage for the potty pad, so it is like taking their dog outdoors. The dog understands it is different. You might try designating the bathroom as the piddle pad room.

Also, my younger boy was easy to train to piddle on the pad, but very reluctant to poop on the pad. He still prefers to go outdoors.

Best wishes and good luck.

My yorkie helped so much afer bringing home our shih tzu puppy a year later, the shih tzu peed on the pad and pooped without any special training due to our Yorkie already doing so. you can try it, a lot of the pee pads are scented to attract the dogs to use the bathroom on them. My 2 potty both inside and outside, when the weather is in the triple digets as it has been I cannot take them outside. Extreme weather conditions is understandable why you would want your dog to use a potty pad.

Welcome to YT. I am sorry about the potty area being a dangerous walk away. I think you have the same problem my Mom has in her Senior Apt. She only has a front door, no back door, no patio etc. All my dogs were dual trained to use washable pee pads and the yard. But, sadly I was not able to teach Gracie (my rescue) to use potty pads. She wasn't really potty trained at all when I got her. She loved going outside so that is how I trained her. Maybe someone else has some good ideas.

I agree with this solution! Also, you can take a pee pad outside with you, introduce her to it outside, hopefully she will tinkle on it, then take the pad back into a designated area of the house, and re-introduce her to it, telling her to "(whatever your command will be to potty)".....you may want to start doing this NOW so she will at least have a clue what you are wanting in 4 months...and she cant look at you one morning, at 5am, when it is 10* outside, and there is 3 feet of new snow on the ground and those steps are covered in ice, and say, "What in the world are you talking about????" God love 'em! She may do that anyway, but you can at least tell her "Bella Rose, Dont dummy up on me now!!! You KNOW what I am saying"!!!!!!!!!!!

Just this past Monday I also bought a yorkie on craigslist named Bella She is also 4 years old and 100% potty trained to go outside. I also wanted to train her to use the pads. I left them down for 4 days constantly telling her to go pee pee on them but she just wouldn't, she thought they were little blankets for her to lay on She can hold it for hours, then eventually she just cries for me to take her out. I just gave up and decided to keep taking her outside to potty. I'm just thankful that she doesn't go on the carpets lol. When the evil New England winter hits it's not going to be fun but when I take her out if shes just sniffing around being nosey I tell her to go pee pee and she does. I'm moving soon and in the new place I will be able to stand inside and let her out on the long leash to do her business lol. I don't think she will mind because she probably won't be enjoying the cold either

In addition to using a scent to attract her to the pad, when you get her to go on it praise her and give her a small "taste" of a training treat. Don't give a whole treat as it could upset her tummy. If she goes on the pad, let that be the ONLY time she receives treats until she is using a pad readily. Then fade out giving treats...just give them randomly. That's how I trained my yorkie to do stuff. I picked one thing that was the most important thing I wanted her to do...and that was the only time she was given a treat....when she did the one thing I had picked out as most important to me for her to do. I think I was a bit redundant sounding.

Welcome, Claudene and Bella Rose. I'm so happy you found a sweet baby. I think you can't go wrong with pad breaking that way you are covered on rainy days and all. Others will chime in. Enjoy your girl.

Hello and welcome to YT! Hope we can see pics of little Bella soon!

I wish I had some advice for you. My Roxie came to us completely outdoor trained. I tried potty pads and a doggie litter box and treats to no avail. Yes, it stinks in the rain and winter weather, but we have just decided to accept it as it is.

Friend of mine broke her hip and had trouble taking her Yorkie out. We took piddle pads outside when she puddles and blotted the urine up with the pad then took it inside to the bathroom and she started telling her to go there on the pad with her pee scent. She used treats and big praise to, and it worked.

Haven't had any other experience with it. Cali came to me piddle pad trained so we've never had the issue - it is nice on those icy or rainy days

My only other suggestion would be to take the pee pad to the area that she is accustomed to going in. If you can stand with her on the pee pad until she goes it may help her to get the idea of what they are for. Reward her greatly when she goes where she is supposed to. When you get her to pee on a pad take it home and leave it where you want her to go. If you can teach her a command like, "go potty" it will help her to know what you are expecting of her. Some of the pee pads do have a hormone on them that is supposed to help attract the dog to pee on it but some brands are better than others. You can also buy a liquid house breaking aid to put on
the pad to help entice your dog to go. You do want to start working on this now way before the colder weather moves in.
