| Yorkie Stud fees Hi all. My sister has a mini yorkie male(1.5kg) that a friend of ours that is a registered breeder wants to use as a stud. Do you charge the price of a puppy or ask for a puppy. (my sisters yorkie was purchased from a very reputable breeder thats well known in the showring and that is one of the first Biewer Yorkie inporters/breeders in SA-she gives regular Yorkie advice in the SA Animal Talk magazine). My friend whom whishes to use him as a stud also charges alot of money for her pups. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!Thank you so much! YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I think perhaps the best place to ask would be with-in your contacts in South Africa. I have no idea of the norms in South Africa. In North America, usually the stud owner, and the owner of the bitch, discuss and come to terms agreeable to both. Many different scenarios can ensue, an outright stud fee, first pick of litter, a puppy from the breeding, some combination of a stud fee and right of reserving a puppy from the litter. The stud fee is not affected by the "size" of the stud, but more accurately by the quality of the stud. How many championships he has earned, all the right health tests passed and recorded "officially" through whatever the equivalent of offa is in South Africa. Plus what qualities does he bring to the table to enhance or compliment the bitch? Both parties should be doing a through pedigree research. Both dogs should have the appropriate pre breeding tests done. There is simply no easy answer to your question, but the above represents actions and thoughts that responsible breeders go through.

| Another thing to consider is this. Are you willing to have the personality of your little male changed forever? I have read a lot about stud dogs and some of the behaviors would definitely be deal-breakers for me. Good luck!

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Thanks Tracy, as a breeder that never crosses my mind; hey they are boys after all!. But yes a male Yorkie can mark more often after studding. But there are of course ways to deal with this. I do tell folks if you want to be a multi dog owner, and to be a Clean Neat Freak, better be rich and have lots of help, or be willing to double the time cleaning your home. BTW I was a Clean and Neat Freak. One cat was fine, then one dog was fine. Well my household grew, and I finally gave up and relaxed abit. But my floors are washed every week, walls done once a month, and I only sweep once every two days! Also now my table tops have dust on them, and laundry can wait till after walks or training. I also did have brand new beautiful wood mouldings around all doorways, walls etc, they are now chewed in every corner! A result of Razzle teething, and me not being aware enough..... My other boys loved their chew toys, and left mouldings alone! Let us just say I'm too scared to get a black light LOL LOL
