| Howdo you keep them still..... so you can comb and brush them? I've been trying and trying to get my little Emy brushed, but she just fights me and wiggles constantly, while trying to mouth my hand with her little dagger teeth. I need to get her combed out on her legs, but she won't let me. Also, I haven't yet given her a bath yet, how do I go about it, I got one of those PetGear pup Tubs, but I haven't used it yet, cause I know its going to be a fight. Do I put a small amount of lukewarm water in it or how do I go about it? |

| Have you tried using a different brush and / or a lighter touch? For a bath, after she is combed out, I would use a cup to gently pour luke warm water over her to start.

| some will move no matter what type of brush, just lots of patience and do one leg each day or several hours apart. mix brushing with petting and some treats. Not sure what type of shower you have but I have been showering with my yorkies for the last 25years, I even brush there teeth while the conditioner is on them. It's easy on my back, and not very messy.

| Well, how old is your baby and what kind of comb are you using? I usually use a couple of different sized grooming combs. A small 4" comb for face and legs and a 6" comb for the body. toplinepet.com for example. I only brush after all tangles are gone. It is less painful that way to your pet. Do a little combing everyday if she needs it or not. That way she will learn that this is a daily even and will eventually accept it if you make it as quick and painless as possible. I don't know how big your pup is. I bathe mine in the kitchen sink. I used to just pour water from a cup to wet her down but now I use this: Rinse Ace 3-Way Pet Faucet Sprayer at PETCO It has 3 different spray strengths and has made bath time much quicker. Just make your grooming sessions short and keeping her tangle free will make it more enjoyable for you both. |

| They all fight & fuss & play with everything at first. With time, some maturity & your telling her "uh oh" or "no" when she gets too frisky, along with your usual dog training that goes with getting a new dog, she will settle down & accept grooming as a part of life. Keep each session very short. Praise & treat when done. I bathe my small dogs in the kitchen sink, clean/disinfect it afterward. They fight the bath but keep yourself calm, hold her firmly as you hold her & soap, rinse, keep wiping her eyes & nose so she won't think she is drowning at first & myself, I put on calming music & speak little during the bath, letting my hands calm the dog by gently but firmly holding it & stroking, massaging as I stay relaxed. Does tend to calm them - firm, gentle hands. My Tibbe stands still, quiet & often closes his eyes during his bath he is so at ease - and he fought, clawed & bit at me like a tiger when I first tried to bathe him, he was so cage-crazy back then. Time & patience has worked its magic with him.

| You have gotten good advice. I also suggest when a puppy nips and bites correct by pushing into the mouth and use the same cue word every time. Example 'Ouchie !' then push into the bite.

| Toby is the same way. He wiggles like crazy when I'm trying to brush him after his bath. I found that giving him a toy or something to chew on usually keeps him still and occupied while I brush him. He loves biting on his little toothbrush while I'm brushing him. You could try giving him something similar. |

| DBlain: I'm curious about how you go about showering with your dog. What does the dog do while your washing yourself, or do you just go in to give your dog a bath? I have a shower with a sliding door, so she wouldn't be able to get out. She would probably freak or something, but it sounds like an easier way to get it done. Thank you all for all your tips. |

| I think that mixing the brushing with petting is a good idea, I have never thought of this.. All I have to do is show Charlie the brush and he comes running. He has always loved it. LOL
