| How big will my puppy get and any ideas about her "hacking"?? My yorkie puppy "Pippa" just weighed in at 3.6lbs at 12 weeks. How big do you think she will be as an adult? Also, on another note, every morning she wakes up and hacks lots almost like she's trying to cough up a hair ball. Is this normal? My old yorkie use to do this randomly but never consistently like Pippa is. I've noticed it's always in the morning and then just once in awhile during the day. Otherwise she seems really healthy and I don't think it's kennel cough because it's not happening throughout the day. My vet is unsure and wants me to bring her back in if it gets worse or doesn't go away. Any ideas??? |

There are puppy charts etc., but no two pups are the same. My Miss Mini was tiny and everyone said she would weigh no more than 4 or 5 pounds...shes a healthy 7. Mia was huge at 12 weeks and weighs 6 lbs at 8 months. Honestly I think shes done growing. Shes been 6 lbs. for about 3 months now so we will see. Your puppy will get as big as shes meant to be!

| Hello Maritta and welcome to YT! I am not sure how big your little will get (really can't predict) . But I wanted to say that maybe Pippa has some type of allergies if she is just sneezing in the morning... though Jack tends to sneeze in the morning also... but he doesn't have allergies that we know of. Might just be a yorkie thing. Hopefully others will respond.

| Thanks! I made a mistake she weighed in at 1.6lbs @ 12 weeks. I will take her back to the vet but I was hoping someone may have an idea of what this could be. I'm confused because my yorkie Kecia did do this as well but more randomly. She was 4lbs and lived to be 17years so I was hoping maybe this is something that can happen with smaller dogs? |

| It's not sneezing, it's exactly like when a cat clears it's throat. It's like a long cough where it sounds like she's trying to clear something out of her throat. I was thinking maybe phlegm building up at night in her sleep? But nothing actually comes out. I didn't think anything of it because me other dog did it her whole life just not every morning. |

What your describing to me a former cat owner and a current Yorkie owner is dry heaving...My Miss Mini use to do this all the time, I now give her Pepcid each day. Just wondering if it could be her food not agreeing with her? Again, I would really try getting it on video.

| Has she done this while your vet was present? If not I definately would take a video to him. Laddy does this thing we call his goose honk after he drinks. Our vet said that yorkies do this some its reverse sneeze. Hopefully that is what you mean. Good luck and welcome to YT.

Paris: Always in my ♥ Donating YT Member | Also be sure to use a harness NOT a collar on your pup to help prevent collapsing trachea. I would like to see the video also. |

| Oliver started coughing at 11 weeks, first only at night and early mornings. Vet listened to his lungs, checked throat, ears. She said it was mild kennel cough, lungs were clear and put him on antibiotics. We washed all his bedding, ours. He was on antibiotics for about 2 weeks. He hasn't had the coughing spells since. The vet wanted him better before his first boosters. He's almost ready for the second booster. Definitely go see Vet again.

| My vet did say to come back in 2 weeks and if it hasn't gone away he'd give an antibiotic so it will be two weeks this Tuesday so I'll definately go do that. Of course, this morning I had my iphone all ready to video her and she never did it...go figure! I will have it on hand tomorrow. I hope it is mild kennel cough, good to hear from someone else who has also experienced this. She's so small I just worry that something mild could make her very sick but she is 100% healthy in every other way. As far as the collar/harness goes, I only use a harness on her but she pretty much has stayed inside with me because she doesn't know how to walk on it yet and when we do let her on our grass she tries to eat it which I know is bad for dogs. Thanks everyone! I can already see how useful this forum is...wish I had known about it with my last yorkie! |

| Is she hacking or is it a reverse sneeze? Check out this thread in the YT library that talks about how to differentiate between reverse sneezing and other issues. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...d-trachea.html You can google other examples, but it's very common for yorkies to reverse sneeze.

| There is a genetic weakness in some Yorke's trachea's. Make sure you do not put a collar on her. I would also have the vet check her trachea and see if she has a problem with the cartilage in that area. She surely should not be making that sound on a regular basis. |

| Wow! Thanks for the youtube video links...now I definately think it's kennel cough. She also does reverse sneezing too but the morning hacking sounds just like the dogs in the kennel cough videos. It must be mild seeing how it only happens in the morning(except today) so should I let it run it's course and see if it clears up on its own or is it better to have her get antibiotics right away? |
