YorkieTalk Newbie! | Yorkie food CALLING ALL YOU AMAZING EXPERTS. Hello Everyone. Need some advise. I started Bella on Royal Canin . I started some research and saw that several people have reported complaints about their yorkies getting sick of Royal Canin. Does anyone recommend something? I have gotten recommendations for California Natural, Diamond, Taste of the Wild or Wellness. |

| Fromm Acana Blue Buffalo Dog food advisor is a great resource but keep in mind that different dogs are going to react differently to different formulas. Some 5 star foods are grain free, high in fat, and high in protein which can be too rich for some dogs. I'd look through the 4 and 5 star rated foods to start with...a good starting point since those foods will be either grain-free, contain good grains (not in excessive amounts), and have a good meat source as the primary ingredient. |

| It's true that some of the grain free five star foods are higher in protein and fat than some other foods but in many of those foods there are higher quality protein sources that are much more digestible than the lower quality proteins that are in many foods. My girl refuses all kibble and has since she was a baby. I feed her a commercial grain free raw food. It has low fat and low protein. |

| I was just having the same issue with pet food, I did some research and talked to our vet, I started Kingston on EVO red meat small bites. It's high in protein and suppose to be really good for small breeds. It's a little pricey but I'm hoping it works as well as the vet says it's suppose to. |

| I have been in the food changing position too many times. I know how confusing it can be. I home cook and think it is the best way to go. However, I also leave out dry for them. Due to limited selection, I am using Blue Buffalo (the turkey one for sensitive tummies). I think it is Blue Basics. They have done fine on it. Many recommend Fromm here. I was feeding TOTW and stopped because of the recalls. As far as RC causing issues, when I was researching foods it seemed like I could find something wrong with all if them. Sometimes what didnt work for one dog might work well for another.

| Blue Buffalo is made at like a gazillion different manufacturers. They killed some dogs with Vitamin K (I think) over-dose. Champion Pet Foods killed cats over in Australia due to the radiation or something. Royal Canin recalled a few prescription foods during the big 2007 recall. Nature's Variety voluntarily recalled a batch for possible salmonella poisoning. You are going to find an issue with almost every company. It's a matter of finding who you trust the most as a company, how they handled the recalls, how your dog does on their food, etc. At this point in time, we find Acana works for best for us. Every time we try something new ... we end up going back to Acana. I like Fromm the best actually. As a company mostly. They are still a small family owned business after over 100 years, they have never had a recall or any kind of FDA warning, their customer service is superb, unfortunately my dog doesn't do well on their foods. He gets gassy, itchy, and runny eyes. So even though they are my fav company, I can't feed their foods. With that said, I'd never feed anything from Diamond again. As far issues go, they seem to have the most, and never seem to learn from their past mistakes. I don't really like Blue Buffalo much to be honest though. There's so few brands I'd feed these days but I am picky when it comes to my dogs health ...

| IMHO the best food is the one your dog will eat. No point in spending a fortune on food they won't entertain. There's nothing wrong with royal canin. Most dogs at some point will turn their nose up at the food. Could be cause their not hungry or any other reason just keep putting it down at meal times and when their hungry they will eat it.

I am sure Jackson would love to chow down on Beneful and Ol' Roy every day. They coat it with lots of crap to make it tasty. Doesn't mean it's the best for him. But I do agree a lot of dogs will turn their nose up at food and it shouldn't mean you go and switch right away or anything! That'll create a picky monster LOL... and if she's doing well on the Royal Canin, stick with it.
