| Looking Into New Boarding/Doggie Daycare We're looking into new boarding/daycare options for Roxie. I'm just not comfortable with the kennel anymore. We're going for a trial morning Monday at a new place. It is very different from the kennel. The place has several large rooms and outdoor play areas, and the dogs are all together all day. At night they sleep together in one room called the lounge. Every room is staffed at all times, and there is a webcam on their website where you can watch live what is happening in each room. I'm a bit worried about little Roxie being with big dogs...and I will have to ask if they do separate small dogs at all. What else should I inquire about/look for?

Zachary's Mom Donating Member | Personally, I would not let my dogs be with ANY other dogs unless I was there and then I would STILL be hesitant. I just read something where a Chihuahua did a lot of damage to a Yorkie by latching on to it's stomach. I even supervise MY OWN 6 since we have two older dogs who are a bit grumpy at times. I have never been comfortable with the Doggie Day Care thing myself though I guess it works since a lot of people use it. But then I am OLD SCHOOL, and one of the 10 people left in the world that believe mothers should be home with their kids and not working till they are in school at the soonest or if they have absolultely no other choice. | Usually I leave Roxie with my parents when we go away, but during our planned week away this summer there is one day where my parents aren't available. I was just looking for an option for that one day. The last time we had to board her was our wedding weekend when no one in my family was available to watch her because they were all involved in the wedding. The kennel left a bad taste in my mouth after that weekend. What other options are there?

i personally would not feel good about doggie daycare. no matter how much they watch the dogs it only takes a second for something to happen. just my opinion of course...

| I think doggie daycare is a great thing for some dogs. I have a friend who brings her guy a lot and he loves it, and gets extremely tired out from it. But they temperament test, put them in separate groups by personality/temperament rather than just size alone. They also, when being boarded over night, stay in their own room. I can't imagine trying to get a huge group of dogs to actually SLEEP for the night and not play... lol Is there no other place, where it's more organized or tested first? Or a house sitter for the 1 night?

What I personally did was advertise for a 'Pet Sitter - in their own home'. I put ads in my Vets office etc, and then interviewed people with Harry....loads of them. Took up references (personally), went to their homes, watched how they interacted - they HAD to get on like a house on fire, or it just wouldn't have happened. And it had to be one-on-one - or with a dog that I knew, and trusted with our 'little' boy! We found someone, a wonderful woman who used to run a Dog Shelter in Goa, who is also an assessor for a Dog Charity 'over here'. All this organization and thought really came into place when Andy had a huge heart scare last year - there was absolutely no-one around to help...but she did - collected Harry, kept him as long as we needed, brought him home as and when....an angel. She allowed me to concentrate my thoughts on getting Andy well again. I wonder if that sort of thing might work for you? I really wish you all the very best for you ALL! | I think I have "lost" a few friends after petsitting .. lol After Bailey got sick I am almost afraid of going away, so when we do I am thinking of boarding at the vets.

I don't know about boarding at the vets though. My breeder, anyway, was against it. He suggested that I shouldn't keep my puppy where mostly sick animals go. He also said to never place your baby directly on the floor or even on the exam table at the vet's office (place a pad or towel on table first.) My breeder also said that if I decided to use my vet for boarding that I inquire whether someone is on premises 24/7. Maybe he's a bit over-cautious - but he's very very experienced with yorkies. I have seen these at home services pop up - where people pet sit in their homes. The services that I've reviewed looked very good and the sitters seemed extraordinarily qualified. I understand that you probably feel safer with your vet though. It's a very difficult decision no matter what you do!! Best wishes, Tracey Last edited by luvlee; 06-27-2012 at 08:40 AM.

It's always quite gobsmacked me, that we take our tiny little babies there to have their jabs (ok, in our arms or in a carrier....but a lot of stuff is air-born). I remember the time I took Harry for his FIRST jab - there was a British Bulldog in the waiting room coughing and wheezing - they DO that, I know. But he was REALLY sick it turned out...and it made me think how many droplets had been floating around - how many had little Harry Boy inhaled? I always, always - even now, take a towel and place it on the Vet's table pre exam - and always boil it when we get home! Over-cautious? Maybe...but I'd rather be safe than sorry! Sally + Harry x

| Well, I left Roxie for the morning at the new place. I was able to watch her on webcam the whole time. She definitely stayed back from the pack most of the time, but she wasn't hiding in a corner. She looked like she was just observing. She was the smallest dog there, although there were quite a few other Yorkies and Chihuahuas with her. I'm going to bring her back Friday morning for another few hours. I want her to have the opportunity to socialize with other dogs, and have time to play off-leash. We'll see where it goes from there. I'd still rather leave her with my parents when we're away. BTW - I won't consider a petsitter in my home. I trust no one in my home that isn't family. It's just the way I am.

| I don't often go anywhere, but when I do my son and DIL watch my pups. The only other option for me would be for a pet sitter to stay at my home.
