| about chewing I have almost 10 month old puppy she chew on everything and we try to get her to stop. we give her toys to stop but lot of the time she don't want it. we try to hide what we don't want her to chew on. But that don't work she work her way back to it. she does it a lot on her carseat. she kind of broke it but it's not where we can't use the belt or whatever it is called. we just don't know what to do to keep her from doing that in the car. thats just one thing she does but she will chew things up in her bed/pen and we have tryed the samething as the carseat. but she has messed the bed/pen up but it's still where we can use it. but we would like to get her out of all this. I know that she still a puppy but should she be out of all this by now or are we doing something wrong with her and is that why she still doing this. we need all the help that we can get and thanks. |

| Most of the things you find in department stores or pet stores are not very healthy for chewing and regular dog toys are more for playing than chewing. Gracie used to steal things to chew on all the time when she was younger, too. I finally found out about bully sticks. They are a wonderful solution for dogs who need to chew. Gracie loves them. They are kind of stinky but they love to chew them and it has kept Gracie from chewing everything she could get her teeth on. This is the best deal I have found online. I always get her the 12" ones because they have to be thrown away when they get to be 3" to 4" long so they don't choke on them. BULLY STICKS Dog Chew (5) - 12" STANDARD ALL-NATURAL !! | eBay Some pet food supply stores sell them and Tractor Supply has some but Gracie likes the Best Bully sticks best. Most stores charge quite a bit more for them. |

YT 1000 Club Member | Pups usually do that for a reason, either they're bored, or they naturally are working their teeth and gums. Lots of people make the mistake of scolding their animal for doing it, without giving them something like a Bully Stick or Chew Toy in place of the wrong thing. Then, they forget to praise them, when they chew on the right things. Our little ones actually want to do what we want them to. Ten months is still a little soon to be expecting one to naturally stop chewing because of dental growth. You might drop by the Vet, and see if he can identify any deciduous which he could remove, that may help things along....a little.

| the traniner said something about a while back about the bully stick. and we have thought about getting one of the bully stick. but we wasn't to sure about them at the time or what size to get either. so we just might look into them the next time we are at petsmart. and I will have the vet to see if she got any baby teeth left since we are going there tomorrow. |

YT 1000 Club Member | gracielove. You're right, that's a good price. Those sticks work out to about $0.262 per inch. I get mine from dog.com (in a much larger quantity) about 2.5 pounds, and those average only slightly more at $0.265 an inch. Ref: Bully Sticks by the Case - Dog.com PS: CAREFUL, you're going to pay a LOT more a a local store for them !!!

| we try to give her things to chew that we want her to chew on. but lot of the time she want to chew on things that we don't want her to. and when we try to get her to stop she will go right back to it and chew on it even more. she will do it 3 to 5 five before she does stop trying any more. we just don't want to her to chew up on things that she need to use everyday like the carseat her harnesse and her bed/pen. and I know she chew up some of her toys. but one of this days she going to chew up something that will hurt her and we just don't want her to do that. so we just might do a bully stick if they are not to hight in prices. and thanks for reminding me of them I forgot all about them. |

YT 1000 Club Member | HA HA, don't worry about the size ! They don't care, and actually, my little Becca rather enjoys running around with a foot long stick in her mouth ! But if you do go with a BStick, be sure that you watch close, and pick them up when they get short. Unfortunately, I am throwing about a dollar's worth of stick in the trash, when my two work them down. Just be persistent about the "do not's", it just takes time for them to get the idea. Be patient !

Zachary's Mom Donating Member | Some of my dogs are chewers, some aren't. Some will chew for a long time, some just for a few minutes. I ONLY give them hooves and antlers. Rawhide makes me nervous as I have heard horror stories of the problems they can cause. Same with bully sticks which are basically rawhide. Several of my dogs have never had anything BUT antlers and hooves. We call them "bones" and who are they to know the difference. Louise |

YT 1000 Club Member | I don't think there is such a thing as "too young". Assuming you've left them with their Mom/Pack for a reasonable 12 or so weeks, they'll have a full set of teeth by then. I wouldn't delay allowing them to start gnawing. First, it may help direct them to chewing the right things, and... regardless that they will replace those teeth eventually, having good clean baby teeth are still important. IMHO.

| I think I gave Toki her first one at 4 months or so... It was amazing! She would just chew on it until she passed out if I let her. It was nice being able to keep her occupied long enough for me to fold a load of laundry without her running off with socks and stomping on folded clothes. And I was able to do studying for classes without her throwing stuffed animals onto my laptop. Just be sure you have your pup in sight while they chew! I haven't met a dog that turned down a bully stick! Last edited by tokipoki; 06-18-2012 at 02:33 PM. Reason: Punctuation |
