| My yorkie was neutered, and he's a different dog. I rescued a Yorkshire Terrior puppy, 6 mos old. I took him 2 weeks ago to be neutered. Before he was neutered, he slept in bed all night with no issues, was sweet and loving all the time. He never had a single accident in the house. Life was good. In the last week, he's been urinating all over the house all the time (vet says he's fine), he's even going in his crate! At bed time, he's up and down, wants to go outside and play, just wont lay still for the night like he use to. He wonders around the house growling at everything and doesn't seem to want to be messed with anymore. HELP! Has this ever happened to anyone? I am heartbroken because I was assured having him neutered was the best thing for him, and now I regret my decision. I miss my baby!! |

| Welcome to YT. Did the vet do a urinalysis and culture? UTIs are common after surgery. Neding to pee all the time in and of itself could make him miserable. But yes, altering can change personality. It will likely get better within a few weeks. Hormones adjusting...

| Did the vet actually examine the dog? There is something wrong! Get him to another vet if the one you went to before won't do anything! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Some dogs have a little setback in potty training for a couple of weeks, but this goes far beyond that. Something is wrong, and if your vet won't help you discover what's wrong, I'd find a different vet. There should really be no personality change, if the dog had been producing testosterone already, it would take at least 6 weeks before it was out of his system. There would be no IMMEDIATE change because of lack of testosterone.

| First thing I thought about was a UTI also. Something is definitely wrong.

| We had our 3 year old little guy done last month and the only change in him is that he quit hiking his leg now squats to pee with one leg 2 inches off the ground lol. I agree I would have him checked right away.

| One of my son's friend has a yorkie that is mean and tries to bite people who visit. You have to keep your ankles up my son said. The dad had the dog in the car with him while picking up the kids one day and I wanted to sit in the car and wait with them. The dad said that because of the dog it wasn't a good idea. He claims that the dog was normal and friendly until he got neutered. Not sure if he was age 1 or 2. I didn't know them before, so I don't know if he made it up. He says he came home from being neutered as a different dog... Maybe a bad experience? I have no idea but I'm just telling you what I heard. Hopefully with lots of love and attention you can get the old personality back. |

| I would suspect a uti also. Could your boy also acting out/up from being in a cage at the vets office? Maybe this triggered some no so good memories?

| The symptoms you are seeing are too excessive to be due to the minor surgery he had. A UTI left unchecked can result in kidney damage. There is also the possibility the the procedure was botched in some way. Please get him to another vet. |

Zachary's Mom Donating Member | My terrier/x Gizmo, was hospitalized from Friday AM till Saturday PM and for 4-5 days, was a different dog, afraid, hiding, etc. She had never been put in a cage before since we got her from the animal shelter. She is OK now. When we got Zachary, our Biewer Yorkie, he was OK. Then he started peeing every 10 minutes, anywhere. I tried to get a urine sample but wasn't able to. So my vet took my word for it that there was a problem (not all will do that but we have been going to this vet for 23 years), put him on an antibiotic, and now he is OK. I agree with everyone else that something is wrong with him. I get frequent UTI and am absolutely MISERABLE. Either he doesn't feel good or he is stressed out from the experience. Keep us up to date. Prayers, Louise |

| I just re read this. Did he come home acting differently or did it start after a few days or a week? If it started after a few days then an infection makes a ton of sense as it would take a few days after the operation for the infection to show up and cause pain. pain is a good explanation. Go to the vet today! |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I will agree with all the other posters, that said most likely is UTI, and that should be caught early. His behaviour changes logically could result from an infection or some sort. Get that checked out first and then see how it goes. How-ever personality changes can and do happen when neutering or spaying any animal; it is just one of the usually (small) risks of that operation. I hope you get to the bottom of this.
