Default puppy update/problem

hey guys update from my situation a few months back.

http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ed-advice.html
quick link to the post incase anybody wanted it

the situation was that my girlfriends mom and her boyfriend had 2 yorkies, the female being really young and from people not watching their dogs, the female got pregnant.

now that the puppies are 7 weeks old, they are healthy and quickly growing and seem to be doing fine. we are both super excited the girl puppy we were promised is healthy, we bought her blue buffalo food and are just ready to have our new addition.

however, we have a bit of a problem on our hands. the mom's boyfriend is telling us that he doesnt want to give up the girl because she is cute and quiet, when he has 4 other dogs, not counting her, to take care of. this would be fine if he actually took care of the dogs he already had and showed that he was a responsible pet parent.

the dogs he have, never get shots, never go outside (except for MAYBE once a day), are not socialized at all, not potty trained, and never get any form of exercise. we are really worried that our puppy is going to end up like the rest of the dogs in the house. we want to give her as great of a life a dog can have, but we are scared that due to these circumstances, we will not be able to.

my girlfriends mom cant really be of help in this issue because they are splitting up and although the mom always tried to take care of the dogs, without her there then there is no way the dogs will be taken care of.

my girlfriend is really upset and i have no idea what to do.

any advice?

Did you get agreement to obtain the pup in writing? If not, it's just words against words and I don't think you have much legal standing (although I'm not a lawyer)...the hardball option would be to argue that the guy is a neglectful owner, but going by what you said I dont think much will stick (bad ownership indeed, but legally lack of potty training, socialization, etc. won't hold up....perhaps there is something about lack of health care with the shots)

In the end, I think your best option is to offer more money for the dog...everything has a price and I have a feeling this guy will see dollar signs....

I agree....I will throw in my supposition....I think perhaps the boyfriend has been told by someone that he could sell that little dog and make over a grtand....and I too, think he is looking for $$$$. Such a shame....and as usual, the most innocent get caught in the frey.....good luck ......of course, I would NEVER encouraging telling a lie, but sometimes, when you are trying to horse trade with a slimeball, you need to use tactics he is most comfortable with. I might even go for a visit with the puppy, and while you are holding the baby, ooohhing and aaahhhing, one could stop and look into that babys eyes, and say....UH OH....Uh OH.....This COULD explane the quiet demeanor of this baby.....the GOOD thing is, this can be surgically corrected....and I think most vet schools will allow you to put everything over $3500.00 on a credit card, so that would be helpful." If this guy is as poor an owner as you think he is, he has NO intention of running up a vet bill to get anything "diagnosed" on this baby.....However much you said you would pay for the baby, you could tell him you would be willing to "add a LITTLE more, but the vet bills are probably going to go well over 3 thousand, and hopefully the baby will survive the surgery, if needed....." . This is a sneeky, underhanded way of trying to solve a problem that has the potential of having a poor, unfortuate outcome for this precious little baby.....all is fair in love and war..........of course, I would never suggest anyone actually do anything like this....forget I even mentioned it....address to the jury ~ "Strike that last paragraph from the record".........

I think that would actually work. Gotta get that puppy out of there from the sounds of it, it will have a horrible life there Probably be bred too

After all you did to help these people with the pregnancy and whelp, it's a shame that this guy is trying to renig on your verbal agreement. Here in Florida, a verbal agreement is legally binding, check the laws in your state if it comes to that.

If the dogs are all not potty trained, the place must be covered in urine and feces. One phone call to Animal Control would hopefully force these folks to either clean up their act, or give up the animals. It's a shame that they're not even getting immunizations. Very sad

Good luck, I hope that you get your baby!!!!

The issue here is that they promised this puppy to them in thanks (I think) for all the help they gave with the whelp, etc. People that don't keep their word irk me!

Yes I know it just sounds like he is going to Be a jerk I would just take it as a lesson learned and find my own puppy. I am sympathetic to her situation though

Yeah, you're right, they might be better off that way, anyway, since the dogs there (including the one that just had the babies) didn't get basic vet care. Puppy could be unhealthy

This poor little puppy will, after time, become like the other dogs in the house. Maybe not as aggressive or as severely misbehaved. Maybe if he sees the puppy in a few months he will change his mind. Once he is alone with all those untrained dogs his attitude may change. Of course by then you may have more of a challenge on your hands.
I suppose it is worth offering him a moderate amount of money for the pup. I imagine he is going to sell the other pups? Find out what he is asking for those pups and offer a little more for the female. This is only to save that little girl from being bred at her first heat which is bound to happen in that place.
Did your did your girlfriend's mom put any money into those dogs? She may have rights to those pups and could very well place them where she wants to despite the break up.

I don't understand what the big deal is...I get that they are bad puppy parents and all that. But why are you so concerned that you get the girl puppy? Were you promised a female while she was pregnant. Do you have plans on breeding her? If my dog had puppies, and I was giving one away (for free I assume) it probably would not be the one out of the litter that I could possibly sell and get back some of the $ I spent......

I get that you think they will be poor parents and will either breed the little girl or sell her. Selling her is a reasonable option for them.....

ALSO, are you still a "broke college kid?" If so, then you can't afford a yorkie puppy anyway due to vetting costs and grooming, and emergencies...Remember, having a puppy is like having a baby. They take a lot of time and money and they NEVER grow up. You always need someone to watch them and take care of them. You can't just take off for the whole day to the beach or stay overnight on a whim.

I hope it works out for you.

True enough. If they don't have money they can't afford this puppy. Just basic vet bills and having her spayed is going to take a bit of cash. Does the girlfriend live with her mom? It doesn't seem that her mom is interested in helping out with these pups at all. If she was, she would give the pup to her daughter, clear out of there and give the puppy the proper care it needs.

Hello, sorry to hear about this situation. You have been given some good advice and asked some valid questions. I too, think money would tempt this guy into giving up the pup.
1) I think getting the puppy away from this guy is the right thing to do.
2) If you have the time, money and love to give, and are sure it will be a forever home, keep the puppy yourself.
3) If you get the puppy and can not give it the best forever home, place it with someone, or a rescue that can.
Hugs for you and Prayers that this will turn out right.

If this place is dirty, and the adult dogs do not get vet care, and the puppies have not yet gotten vet care. Well for me I would not be even thinking about adopting a pet from there. I think I understand, your girlfriends Mom helped out with the whelp; and if she was promised a female for her services she should have gotten it in writing.

I would be concerned with parasites, ticks, fleas, and the illnessess that come with that. Never mind what the genetic background health of the puppy is.

If you are a college student, then you need to consider more than a passing thought to how you will afford the puppy. IN the first year, baring any UNUSUAL health issues you can be looking at upwards of $700 for the vetting, shots and spaying. And this is with a HEALTHY puppy.

Let me say this in closing; There is nothing Free about a "Free" dog that has health problems.
