Yorkie Yakker | summer My Yorkie gets overheated quickly, she has been playing outside with my mom's poodles since it has been warm out and they are fine, but Daisy is panting, her skin is hot, and she is looking at me like...help me! Is it common for a Yorkie to not handle the heat? |

| I don't know how common it is, but Jackson cannot stand it when it's hot. The only thing he enjoys about summer is swimming & water. LOL. An employee at our local pet boutique says she also has a Yorkie who despises the heat.

| I've come to the conclusion that since they are so much closer to the ground/asphalt, it gets hotter for them more quickly than we realize. I will put my bare foot on the ground when I take them out to see just how hot it is. I try and get them to walk on the grass if possible or I take them out in the stroller and put them down to do their business. My 2 really do not go very far when it's too hot, but at dusk, they don't seem to mind walking. When we go out on the boat, I am continually dunking them in the water to keep them cool. Can you pour a bit of water over your little one when she's been outside for awhile?

| opps looks like there is a duplicate thread, so I copied my reply from the other thread and posted it below mine have always seemed to have felt the heat, Lola especially so. Thankfully she likes the water, so at home we go for a dip in the lake. But even tonight she was inside in the air and panting hard after a rousing game of fetch and keep away. I took an ice cube and ran it under some warm water, I rubbed it on her neck and down her back and let her lick it, and soon she was no longer panting heavily. If it is warm before we head out for a walk, I take some water in my hand and put some on her neck, belly and back. We boat and often when we are not moving, I dip her over the side and wet her paws and tummy then drip some over her back. Keeping her wet really helps and you can tell because she perks right up. My last one did not like the water but I still wet him down in the heat because it was for his own good. On thing I do not do is use freezing cold water and give her a big douse at once, that would probably make them afraid.

Yorkie Yakker | I'm sorry but I'm a little new at this and I did post it twice. So this does seem to be common, I need to make some ice for her, I was just trying to give her more water and she wasn't really wanting it, now I'll just put some one her, thank you for all of the suggestions. | make sure you warm the ice up, LOL I know that sounds weird, but if you ever licked an ice cold ice cube and had it stick to your tongue you will understand...... tap water or cool water is fine, just get her wet often when it is hot. Oddly enough even though you think they should be drinking more water when it is hot they often do not, sometimes I just get her mouth wet, or put a little on my hand for her to lick, that's why I use the ice cube she seems to like to lick it or play with it.

| Mine really dont care for it however we have a stream in our yard and they will lay in it to get cool so I think having a little shallow pool for them in the summer is good

| Sometimes they are having so much fun that they forget to come in out of the sun and rest, so we have to make sure they don't stay in the sun very long. You could put a kiddie pool out with a couple inches of water, you can also put dog sunscreen on them, and sunblock on the face and ears, http://vetmedicine.about.com/od/dise...screens.htmand feed them barley. Barley is the only food that cools the inner core of humans and dogs. There is pearled barley and quick cooking barley. I cook the barley in a beef or turkey broth so it has a better flavor. Try to limit walks to either early morning or evening when it's cooler outside, and if the asphalt is hot, then try sneakers for them. The ones that have tiny air holes to keep the paws cooler.

| I've got one of each Luna LOVES the heat and will lay on our wooden deck, which I can't even put my bare hand or foot on Izzy is begging to go inside after a few minutes If she's out in the heat for too long ,she will actually vomit, poor baby, so we don't push the issue and just take her inside now. That only happened once and it scared the %#$@ out of me! Luna loves a bowl of ice water out there and we keep putting more ice in it as it melts. She'll also play in it, but she won't go in the pool

| None of mine tolerate the heat well...I shave them all down during the summer, and I have several shallow kiddie pools in the yard, plus a slip and slide, plus the sprinkler and they have a ball running thru all the water....it keeps every one cooled and refreshed and after a couple of hours, they all come back into the a/c to cool down. I have stained concrete floors, and they all lay down, legs stretched out flat, like frogs, on the cool concrete, and rejuvinate! |

Yorkie Yakker | I am still having trouble getting around on here, but I think I'm figuring out how to respond now, thank you for the good advise on keeping her cool this summer, and the frog pose on any cool surface sounds familiar..lol |
