| Do you keep them indoors till all shots.... I'm getting my little girl in a week, the breeder has given her 2 shots so far a month apart...I guess thats the series that they get, so when I get her she won't be getting another shot for another 4 weeks, cause she's getting a shot on June 3, I'm getting her June 5. So what do I do, do I not let her outside at all during that time? And just hope for the best with the potty pads and make sure she's trained on them, and them let her outside after the whole series of shots is done? Not sure what to do here... Also should I apply for pet insurance now, so when I get her the usual 14 days waiting period will be over when I get her and she will be totally covered or should I wait till she's actually in my house then get the insurance. |

Usually the norm is to wait till the puppy is 16 weeks to go out in public. I think in your own yard ( if it is not visited by strange dogs) should be fine. I think insurance would be ok too, although some insurance have an age requirement so check that first.

| I think it depends on what your "outdoor" situation is. If you live in an apartment, and there are all sorts of dogs that use that outdoor area that your pup would use, then I would keep the pup indoors until two weeks after all of the shots are completed. If you live in a house with a fenced in back yard and there are never any other dogs back there (unless they belong to you), then it would be OK to introduce them to that area and start training them to potty there. Re the insurance, you might want to read the fine print. They may or may not allow what you want to do wrt getting coverage before you actually take possession of the pup.

| I pretty much started taking my puppy outside as soon as we got her for potty training. We didn't walk around the neighborhood or at the park until she got all of her shots though...just stayed in our yard. My vet said that if we didn't want to train her to use puppy pads and wanted her to use the bathroom outside only, we could just take her out in our yard so we would not have to retrain her on where to potty. |

| I was REALLY OCD with Peanut- Working as a Vet Tech at the time I watched puppies come in with Parvo- I was so protective over Peanut bc of that I didnt take him anywhere till he had all his shots! I think the only place he went was my Mom's house, and he didnt go in the backyard or anything- I pretty much carried him everywhere! IMO you should wait, better safe than sorry- Also NEVER put your dog in one of the shopping carts at Petco/ Petsmart, you wouldnt believe how many dogs have been in there with Parvo- I worked at the Vet Banfield in Petsmart, I remember one time a guy brought his dog in a shopping cart, all of a sudden the dog had explosive diarrhea- It went all over the shopping cart!! Turned out the dog had Parvo!

| We don't live in an apartment, we live on 55 acres, but I don't have a fenced in back yard, I kinda have my yard put into little rocks, only a little strip of lawn, which my husband put up a huge exercise pen, which I had when we had (3) large dogs and had it divided into 3 attached pens, I just made one big pen, but its lawn, wondering if I should take her out there, we don't have any dogs around our yard, but we do get racoons that cross our porch at night, I don't want to go outside for her to potty at night anyway. We do have a big circular concrete driveway...I could just walk her around the driveway couldn't I...I'll probably ask the vet when I get her in there for her health exam right after I get her. Thanks All! |

I wanted to underscore, bold print, capitalize this ENTIRE post!!! ESPECIALLY ABOUT PETCO/PETSMART!!! EVEN AFTER THEY ARE FULLY VACCINATED!!! I HAVE READ WHERE THE PARVO VIRUS IS MUTATING AND IS BECOMING RESISTANT TO SOME VACCINATIONS....everytime I see shere someone had a fully vaccinated dog and it still got Parvo, I wonder if this may not be true.... I think Parvo is our "disease de jour" here in Texas, especially HOUSTON!!! IT IS RAMPANT HERE....Just wait to expose your baby to the "ravages of public interactions"!!

Half the time I asked where have they taken yourpuppy- " oh I took them to the dog park"!! I wanted to scream at them!! I wanted to say I told you 2 weeks ago when you came in for the first puppy check do not take your dog to any dog parks or grass areas in general!!! You have no idea how frustrating that was!! People just dont get it! To this day Peanut doesn't go in those carts! I hold him or he goes in his stroller!!

| Nope, never ever could have imagined if Jackson stayed indoors until past 16+ weeks. I had never even heard of that, all of our family dogs, etc, all went out at least in their own yard from day one. I wanted to get started on potty training. And by then, Jackson had already experienced water, grass, rain, mud, snow. So much is learned in those first few weeks with your pup. I think you have to be smart about it. No dog parks early on, or pet stores. Honestly... you can carry parvo inside on your shoes. It's probably more likely for a dog to get sick from something going around at the vets office than in your own yard. If you know there's parvo in your area, play it safe. Pay attention to what diseases are around in your location. But no, I never would keep a pup fully indoors until all shots kick in.

| Hi another OCD mommie here. I don't let any of my little ones walk or sit in a cart at Petco or other pet friendly businesses. I don't let them have treats that they give out a the bank. I use to go to the dog park, but I stopped after a friends dog got really sick from eating some food left there. I had to use a kennel for Lizzie and Mollie last Dec. They usually stay with grandmaw and paw paw but they had to be out of town. I took them to a doggie resort thinking they would do a great job they had video cams so you could check in and see them. They were there for 48 hours. When they came home they were so sick throwing up and diarrhea after 24 for hours was our first of 3 vet trips. The vet did test and diagnosed it as a food allergies i had sent their food and treats but was informed after called and complained pthat during play time thy may accidentally eat other dogs food. They only stay with their grandparents. I will rearannge my vacations so they can stay with them. I have even stopped using groomers because I was picking up Lizzie and the woman infront of me was paying and the groomer was telling her how bad the fleas were on her dog. I was thinking this is great now I get to deal with fleas I was lucky Liz was fine. I learned now to groom them myself. Call me crazy or over cautious but they are to precious to risk them getting sick for no reason other than me letting them do something |

Welcome to MY "OCD" world!!! I dont let my babies go to new homes until 12 weeks old....if new owners cant wait another month or 6 weeks before "going out into the public, or family meet and greets", I need to know that...I will just keep the baby and let them leave at 18 weeks!

| We ended up with a case of parvo that cost us 7500.00 and almost cost us our puppy. He had already had 2 rounds of shots, never showed any signs or symptoms, and it just so happened we had taken him and Allie to the vet for a check up and shots so we could go on vacation. We were leaving as soon as we were done with the vet. He started having seizures 20 minutes down the road and we turned around and went back. When we got Westley, he wasn't allowed outside until all his shots were completed, and his feet never touched the grass until he was 6 months old. I bleached my entire home, didnt allow visitors and all shoes came off before entering the house. I wasn't taking any chances and risking my dogs lives again. It was hard enough the first time thinking I might have to have Noah put to sleep.

| I didn't keep him indoors but he was only allowed in my garden, I took a peepad to the vet for the scales and table for his puppy shots and check ups and he didn't go to any public place until he was finished with all his puppy shots and vet approved and no one but me was to touch him other than my vet people walked by my garden and said oh can I see the puppy and I said from there you can, you can't touch him, I love doing that (evil grin) because I'm not risking my dog's health so you can touch something cute and fluffy Last edited by Teegy; 05-29-2012 at 08:23 AM. |

| OMG, now I really don't know what to do, some of you do and some of you don't, with all these scary stories I keep reading on this forum, I'm starting to have buyers remorse like the post-puppy depression post. She a week away, and I'm terrified that something is going to go wrong with her after reading all these posts on here. Guess I'll work it out I suppose. |
