| How long after spay did you bathe her? Sami got spayed 10 days ago tomorrow. They said wait 14 days to bathe her. Her incision is practically healed, just one little scab looking piece that looks like it is ready to fall off. I want to bathe her as soon as it does. Do you think I really have to wait 14 days?

| I personally would wait. My dog had surgery and he had his sutures in for two weeks. He didn't smell at all. I just cleaned his eyes and around his face as well as his under belly area every day. You only have a few more days...

| If the vet said 14 days, then 14 days. Scraps had staples in him, and they said 3 weeks. Even after a week he looked fine but I called them and they said 3 weeks, and after they came out they said wait until tomorrow to give him a bath.

| All it takes is one microscopic opening and one microscopic bacteria to find that opening and your baby could get a nasty, life threatening infection. Definitely wait the 14 days. If there are stitches to be removed, then I'd wait an additional day or two after they come out to allow the tiny suture holes to completely close, as well.

| I waited till the vet said it was ok but I didn't have any issues with it since I used grooming spray everyday when I brushed her. Really, washing their face and using grooming spray keeps them decent until bath time.

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | Our vet told us at least 14 days also. If I remember right, we did wait, but she didn't get that dirty because she stayed inside a good while after. It was so cold outside though when we had hers done. Hoping your sweety recovers wonderfully!

| I got CoCo spayed on Friday and they told me to wait 10 days for any and everything. It's hard to keep her from her big sis for 10 days though. I let them play just a littel on yesterday. They had been missing each other. I still keep her as isolated as I can. I will not give her a bath for at least another week or so - depending on her her incision site looks. |

| Is there anything we can use to clean the crusted area over the incision or should we just leave it alone? |

To me, it depends on the dog, how it's healed, and incision itself. When I had my Italian Greyhound, Aiyana, spayed, she was a very sick girl with pyometra - The vet made a VERY tiny incision that thealed quickly, when I took her back a week later, the vet herself advised me to start doing hydrotherapy with her again (we'd been doing it almost daily before we had to spay her), and immediately got me back into her rehab area with her rehab tech. So that was only 7 days, but her incision is far smaller then any dog I've ever had spayed - You can't even tell she's spayed now, there's no noticible scar. If she hadn't been so worried about her bleeding out and having complications, she would have done a normal incision, most vets like to make a slightly larger incision because it does make the surgery a bit easier, and it makes the scar more noticable so there's no question if your dog is spayed if you ever have to prove it. Most dogs, I'd say 10-14 days, but go with what your vet recommends, they know what materials they used and how they did it, as there are different ways to do a spay.

| I waited exactly 2 weeks before I bathed her, but cleaned her with doggy wipes, because the wound was draining lots of liquid, which it turned out to be normal. RIP TRIXIE
