| Big scare last night Well we had a scare last night. Callie went outside for her last potty break and took off like crazy then my grandma who was watching her yells oh my god there is something out there so she tried to unlock the door while I grab my shoes and we both run out there to see Callie about two feet from a opossum! Callie decides this is the time to completely ignore her training and name and pretend I'm not there and that the opossum is not there either and check out her yard around the area like what nothing is going on. Well mean while the opossum is hissing and showing teeth so me and my grandma are freaking out. In my head I am going we are gonna end up at the emergency vet and just not knowing what to do. So my 70 year old grandma gets about 4 feet away from the opossum between it and Callie and then I pretend like I am running around into the house so Callie ran into the house followed by me and my grandma and we shut the doggy door and the human door. It took a while for us to calm down but we where so happy we got her back in the house and safe. This opossum was huge and no joke about the same size as Callie! I never want to see another opossum that close again!

| OMGoodness! We have some pretty big ones around here too! They are very scary and can be vicious if it was a Momma with babies! So glad you were able to get Callie back in the house along with you and your Grandmom. You were worried about having to take Callie to the Vet... I was worried you and your Grandmom would be at the ER! Glad it turned out well and everyone is okay! Close call!

| Oh, that is so scary. I'm surprised she didn't attack it or get too close so that shows that she has got some discernment! I wonder what Tibbe would have done? I so fear he would go for it - whether to try to attack it or just play with it, I don't know. I so fear something like this with him when I let him outside. At least Callie had the sense to not move in on it and thankfully followed you into the house eventually. That was a close call that thankfully ended very well.

| Scary!!!! We have them here too, even had one with babies. She would sleep under our deck during the day and the girls would go APE, scratching and barking at the wood. They carry diseases and pests, so glad Callie was smart enough to steer clear!

| There was one on our deck a couple of weeks ago. Buster and Maggie went out to potty just before I left for work. Buster was going crazy with a "serious" type bark. After a few minutes I went to look, they were both staring at something against the house. At first I thought it was snake, but finally got the nerve to look. They both did the "wait" command so that I could pick them up one at a time and get them back in the house.

| I have had horrible scares from this too ! I am so glad no one was hurt, scratched or bitten. When I told my story about this on YT, some member posted very informed information about opossum(s ?) or it like sheep one is sheep, and more is sheep ?) Anyway I was relieved that they seldom hurt other animals and don't carry rabies as often as skunk, bats, and racoons. But, like Patti said they creep me out too ! That hissing is so frighting ! Hugs for you, brave Grandma and Callie.

| They are living garbage disposals. We have one here also. I throw scraps out and that's how I noticed ours. It was eating the scraps the other night when I took Bella out for the last potty break. |

| Glad everyone is safe! Can I ask a possibly dumb question - is there a difference between an "opossum" and a "possum?" I've always just called them possums.

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | Oh my! I would of been scared too! So glad everything is ok! I am from the south and always have called them possum's too! I think it may just be southern slang leaving the 'o' off but I am not positive!
