| First Dental and Moms a mess! Oh boy! I just booked Dexter for his pre-dental exam for this saturday. I have no idea what Im in for. Was told her needed a dental in Feb when he had an exam so we are ready to do it now. I am already freaking out! I hate that my baby has to go under. Why are they so expensive too??? It can cost anywhere between $300 and $800!! So I am going to be a mess the day he has it done. Is there anything important I need to know or ask about the procedure or about anesthesia? Any questions I should ask at his exam on saturday? Was anyone else this mental knowing their pup was being put to sleep? ugh I hate it!

Blood work , the most expensive anestesia the surgical supplies ironicallly the least expensive is the cost to pull each tooth. It is always unnerving when you have put your baby under anestesia, i always get nervous, i just try to think to positive. As long as the bloodwork comes up normal and he is strong and healthy i am sure he will come through fine and feel better after..

| Thanks! I pray that hes as healthy as I think he is! Little brats been spoiled lately.... my nephew poured his water into his food one day. His food got all soft and he LOVED it! Now he won't eat anything until we put water in his food! I think maybe his teeth are bugging him enough to want his food softened. Its really time to do it. We made it almost 7 years before he needed his first dental!

You are right his teeth and gums are probably hurting thats one reason he likes his food wet. 7 years old before needing a dental is great.

| aaaw, I hope everything goes well, we all stress when our babies are having anything like this done. Also almost 7 years without a dental is wonderful.

How often do they need dentals after the first one? I'm hoping every other year at least so I can rotate them each year.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | First I wish you luck with that Dental. I don't know yet, how frequently cause I've never had to do a dental on any of my dogs at this point. I really wish the vets would come up with a better and different way to do a dental. Why do "all" dogs have to go under? What about locals, what about a sedative? Especially with the wee ones. Razz's mom is over 6 yrs old and has never had a dental! Razz hasn't either, but he is only 3yrs old. I brush his teeth wkly, and he gets the TD big bites from the vet, I add a few to his home cooking 2x daily, plus I add a water additive for the teeth - Susie's. Every six months his breeder deplaques the teeth. We simply wrap him tightly up in a towel, she has the dental instruments she needs to do the work. 15 minutes later we are all happy as a clam. This is done with no sedatives at all! Now that I've seen it done; I've bought the appropriate instruments for my big dogs; as Magic had an eye tooth that developed a bit of plaque on it. It took we about 2 wks to remove it all. He is a tad big to hold on my lap wrapped in a towel. lol The big dogs get a big bone wkly, plus the water additive, plus their teeth brushed wklly; and oh yes I do use the oral gel. It's nice when vets and vet techs say Wow, look at those pearly whites! BTW it is also a minor fault to show any dog with plaque on their teeth.

| Awww, its expensive isnt it! Ellington has been told he will need to be put under to have his teeth properly cleaned, and while they are there they will remove up to 5 teeth. The vet said they like to do it before they get too bad. i was quoted about £300. |

-What kind of anesthesia is used? (I was told that the best was sevoflurane) -How would the vet intervene if there was a problem during the procedure? -Has he encountered any problems with the procedure with your kind of dog? Personally, yes, I was very mental about my dog's dental procedure. I communicated my worries to the vet and his staff, and they did a stellar job, assuring me, and communicating with me during the process. They called me when they started the procedure (when they started to put Tatiana under), during the procedure to update on the progress (and I was able to give input), and at the end of the procedure when Tatiana revived. Thank God, she revived within minutes when the anesthesia was cut-off. Incidentally, Tatiana was small -- about 3 lbs. Yes, Tatiana's dental was pricey. But her vet was arguably the best vet in our area. When it comes to Tatiana's health, I was not looking for the cheapest price in town. I seeked the most capable vet I could afford. Also, we deliberately created a generous budget for this.

YT Addict | That's not bad for tooth removal and dental cleaning. About 400.00 US dollars?? There is a lot that's involved with these procedures. I had a full list of what I was charged for when Miles was neutered ie. catheter, pain meds, iv, etc. , etc., etc. |

Anaesthitise dog (under 10kg) - £67.20 Descale and Polish - £96 5 x dental extraction - £66 Medication - £60 It was less than I had worried about! But for now, i need to save up for other things he needs first, so the teeth will have to wait a little. I want him snipped asap, he needs his jabs, and he needs microchipping. one thing at a time!
