i'm going to look at a baby this morning from a backyard breeder.
What should i expect the tail to look like?
should it be shortened already?
what about the claws?

She should already have her tail docked. If she hasn't by now, she will have to be put under anethsia (sp?) to have it done...dew claws too. I think dew claws are more of a personal preference...but they are a mess if they ever get caught on anything! If you are dead set on having a docked tail, it would be a good idea to have it done when you have her spayed...if you decide to, that is. If not, there are several members here that have Yorkies with tails intact...they are precious.

a 1200.00 pup is looking better every minute.
i mean at least they have had the proper things done to them.
and i could be wrong when i get there the tail may be docked and the claws done but i think she said that she had been giving the shots herself so i feel like maybe it hasn't even seen the vet.
Shouldn't every yorkie breeder have the tail docked since it's the typical yorkie look?
i'll be on my way in a few minutes so i'll now when i get there.

Dewclaws is a personal preference . If let on the Yorkie , they grow and can hurt the paw by entering in the skin . Also it can get caught in a rug or something else , a vet will have to remove it .

I will not get into if a tail 'should' be docked or not...there are alot of people on the board that view it as cruel and unnecessary...I don't want to get that debate started again, so I will just say this: To the best of my knowledge, most breeders take the responsibility of having the tails/claws done when the pups are only a few days old. You will have to decide for yourself if you want a tail or not and if you want it to already be docked when you get the pup. I would be wary of the fact that she gives the shots herself. Ask if you can call her vet or if you can have copies of the vet records for the pups. I have both available for our prespective owners before they have a chance to ask.

What you need to be aware of is that MANY breeders, even small time one that some people on here call "backyard breeders" give their own puppy shots and remove dew claws and dock tails. My husband does. What you also need to know is that not every small breeder is a backyeard breeder. Some only have one or two females that they breed and take care of very carefully. does this make them any less a breeder than someone that has a huge breeding program. NO it does not and many wonderful babies have come from breeders like this. In fact, I would perfer to get my baby from a small breeder than one that has such a huge breeding program. Many of these people are very kind, very knowledgable and take excellant care of their dogs. Of course, as in anything, there are a few bad ones but that is also true in the larger breeding programs. i would be very leery of someone that has a large amount of dogs that they breed. This has been discussed all the time and you never hear anyone admit that they bred for money but almost ten out of ten will say, it's to improve the dogs. But, this ain't my first rodeo and I don't believe that for a minute but it might be true in some cases here people are trying to get show dogs. Please don't write your "backyard" breeder off for the reason you stated about not going to the vet.

I got my pup from a backyard breeder (hobby breeder) and she had had the tails docked and the dew claws removed and taken them for the first round of shots. So I wouldn't worry too much til you actually saw the pups then make a decision. Also we raise quarter horses and we give our own shots to the horses and the barn cats. Most of the time if you've been shown how to give shots and the right amount to give anyone can give there own shots. We also have a vet on call that stops by once a week or so when the colts are young to check and make sure all is well. I wouldn't jump to any conclusions until we know more about the pups and breeder. You should be able to tell immediately whether they are well cared for or not, by whether or not they are clean and if their eyes are bright and clear.

well i'm not sure if that's the right term or not.
but i was told it was ok to buy from a backyard breeder just not a puppymill.
i'll know more when i get there.
she's a registered female 600.00
both parents registered
first litter(3babies)
both parents gold and black
parents between 4-5lbs
lady seems really nice and honest but i can't really know that yet

But my question is Shouldn't most breeders already have tail docked and dew claws done?

If the tail has been docked it will just be a little stub. Anywhere from barely visible to 2-3" long. The dew claws are on the inside of their paws. The should have 4 claws if the have 5 then their dew claws have not been removed (someone correct me if that's not right). The dew claw is located a little ways up the leg on the inside and pretty seperate from the rest of the claws so it sticks out like a sore thumb (lol) if it's still there.
