Going Insane!

I snuck off to meet a breeder last week, and did not tell my family- and I got all the right vibes and my questions answered. I meet both of the puppy parents.

I spent a sleepless night and then "discussed" getting a yorkie with my hubbie.

Last Sunday I took my Mom and best friend (who also happens to be a groomer and dog trainer) to meet "the puppy who has yet to be named". They both loved the puppy, parents and breeder. So I am a soon to be Yorkie mom!

The problem is that puppy can't come home for another MONTH! I am going to go insane!!!! We go away for Memorial Day Weekend, so I NEED to wait until after that to bring puppy home...she will be old enough then too.

So for now I check in hear and read about everyone else...

Puppy is litter box trained-but should I use cat litter? Has any one had a problem with it? What kind do you use? Is there a litter box that you would recomend over another? (yes I even saw puppy use the litter box!)

Hi congrats on your new baby.
I know the waiting is the worst part but it will be so worth it.
Personally i would not use actual litter in the box, some puppies
will eat it...
Try puttin a potty pad in their instead.
Can't wait to meet your baby

Congrats, I know the wait is going to seem like forever. I think they sell paper pellets for the litterpans. I would advise against using cat litter because if the pup eats it , he or she may get sick from the chemicals they put in it .

Not just that, the clay can clump internally with disastrous results...and has many times with kittens. It can get stuck up in the pads and they will lick it out. It will also stick to their teeth.

Piddle pad under paper pellets, gradually reducing the paper pellets to zero would be my choice.

I think you are right about the litter. They have been using it. They have a puppy pad to the side of it, but all of the puppies used the litter box while I was there!

I could not "think" why litter would not be a good idea, but I would not want a little one to eat it.

I have heard of dogs using litter boxes but have never seen it. What ever the pup is used to using I would continue to do at first and then gradually change over to the method you choose to use.

I know the waiting is very difficult but as has been stated it is well worth it. You will have a puppy that is strong and ready to leave it's mom and litter mates to explore the world with you. Every time someone says they are getting a new pup I start wanting another!

the litter for dogs is compressed paper pellets. Don't use cat litter the clay would not be good for the puppy i would imagine. I have used the potty pads since i brought little chewie home at 7 weeks. he is now 4 months and still uses them "most" of the time.

Love the name "Chewie". That is the other thing we are lacking at this time- a name! We have a name board at home... The names right now are Penny, Cap or Pookie.

I don't see a problem with the puppy using what she's use to as long as she doesn't start eating it. I have a freind who's dog used a littler box all of it's life. It got a little messy and had to be swept each day, but that's all.
I use washable pads. Easy to take on trips and all.

I agree with those who are concerned about the puppy eating the litter.

Personally, I use a large bath towel (folded in thirds), and place it on a large plastic tray. The tray keeps the towel in place, and keeps the pee from seeping onto the floor. This is what my breeder had done, and my yorkie Tatiana was potty-trained with it. Of course, the bath towels are machine washable.

Incidentally, another added convenience with the towels is with traveling. When I was in the airport, and Tatiana was traveling with me, I would go into the women's bathroom stalls, and put down a towel for her. Tatiana would go potty on that. I didn't have to go outside, and go through security to come back in. Very, very convenient.

Congratulations! I would not use cat litter... Some dogs eat it, and it is not good for them.

Are you sure she said litter box trained? The pup is very young to learn this and how she would even go in a litter box at that age is surprising. Some people put a pad in a litter box or on a tray, maybe that's what she meant? Congratulations, on your new puppy! One of the things I bought before I got Joey was a car seat that I used as a kennel next to my bed during the early months. It has a zipper and I could place my hand in the kennel and calm Joey down. The first month or so, they have to pee during the night, so they should be in the same room as you, so that they will wake you, when they have to go. Place them on a pee pad, let them pee, and give them a small treat like an unsweetened cheerio, and place them back in their crate. The crate should be small enough that they won’t pee in it, and just big enough so that they can stand up and turn around. This is the type of carrier I used: Snoozer Roll Around Travel Pet Carrier - Pet Carriers with Wheels - Pet Travel Center. I still use it for car travel, a metal bar attaches it to seat belt. Have fun shopping and get sleep while you can!
