Default Suggestions for staying cool in the heat?

Well, our AC is broken and our wonderful maintenance man, Juan, came by to check it out today. He has to order a new part and it won't be here until FRIDAY! It's 79 degrees inside according to the thermostat... we're all sweating like crazy! it's annoying because it's even cooler outside.. but my allergies have been a nightmare lately and I really can't afford to let pollen get all over my stuff or I'll be miserable. I have the fan facing Sophia and Brody on the couch right now, so I'm just going to try to move it to wherever theyre laying. Any other suggestions? I feel so bad for them!! They also have plenty of cold water.

Sophia NEVER sleeps on hard floors, but she did today (pic 1). Hmmm maybe the couch will be better (pic 2).... it's much cooler outside mama!

Awwwww, I hate when the AC breaks! What about box fans? That is what we used when ours broke last year.

Yep we have 2 box fans, probably going to go out to get more. I just feel like its not making a difference unless I'm RIGHT in front of it. Then of course it feels real good

First if the humidity is high, get a de-humidifier....
If not, freeze water bottles hang them in front of the fan. If you have central heat/air, turn on the fan and put the frozen water ON the cold air return... works here... and YES we do get hot weather in Canada!

no advice except the box fans and the froze water bottles sound good to. Hope it cools off enough tonight so you can all get some sleep.

Another thing that helps - freeze some water in shallow dishes and place in front of fans. Sounds crazy but it does help a little!

Aww i am sorry! I remeber my AC broke in the middle of summer and it was 90 degrees out...torture! So i will send prayers that your AC part comes in super fast!

When it gets hot here I take a little bit of chicken broth (Low-or no sodium) and put it in the icecube tray with some water and let them freeze and then I give one to Ralph and he just can not control himself! He loves it! Plus it is an easy and cheap treat for the heat! (:

During hurricane season we keep a supply of the large freezer packs for the furkids. Freeze them, wrap in a towel then lay them around in beds etc.
it helps. Hope your a.c. is fixed soon,I know how miserable it is!

Ghetto Swamp Cooler: Ice & water in a large bowl or wide bucket and face a large fan on full blast blowing off of it. Works well. I used a horse feeder from the local feed store (the rubbery kind) and a HUGE square box fan from Target all in all it was like $60 and saved us the one summer it was hot here.

Also if your dog appears to be over heating at any point using alcohol swabs over their feet (right on their pads to open the pores) and spraying them with cold water is a quick way to alleviate heat stroke before you can get them to emergency help.

Also if they have a thin mat in their kennel those cheapo stay frozen packs for either emergency ice packs or stay cools you put in lunches-I get them at the dollar store here and they can be tossed under the kennel mat to keep it cool.

Removing any rugs from floors to allow them to lay right on a cool floor should help also.

Late morning showers even just wetting them (no shampoo) around mid day could help too-think about how hot our heads get-and our babies are covered in hair even when it's short they get hotter than us faster.

Obviously no T-shirts etc.

Keeping curtains or blinds closed will keep the sun out and keep the house cooler even if yu open windows and have curtain closed-I do this to keep allergens filtered by our microfiber curtains and yet the air gets through to cool the house.

Fans aimed at windows will force the hot air out.

Hope you all stay not only comfy but safe in the heat.

Try having the AC go out in Houston....so bad.
I had the AC go out in my tiny apartment when I was cooking for Thanksgiving dinner (yes, November...but it decided to shoot up to the 80-90s) and my apartment didn't cool down for days it felt like.

I also know how you feel with allergies and doors being open, I have the same problem. I always want to open windows on cool days to run the AC less, but then I get all puffy eyed and can't breathe well.

But yea, I would agree with lots of fans. Well placed fans.
Also, plan lots of outings! Pet store visits? Friend's/family's houses with working AC? "Go to the bank" [apparently that was a legit thing to do in Korea before AC was a common thing in houses, on super hot days people would go sit at the bank. or something like that. second second hand story from my BF]

Good luck with the heat!
