| Spray some bitter apple on the chair. He'll take one lick and be done. |

| My old girl Mitzi licks any material also. The throw over the setter is always covered in wet patches but that's better that a wet settee. I just take it off when visitors arrive.

| In my opinion, animals can have mental disorders just like people do. I have been called to help retrain some Yorkies that need medication. One poor little Yorkie suffered a extreme panic disorder. When she was on the right medication we could work on behavior modification. My advice is have a Vet who works with behavior problems, see your Yorkie. There are many new medications that can 'take the edge off' Obsessive behavior. Best wishes.

| My male does it. I just normally try to rub his paw or something to get him thinking something different. He does drive mr crazy sometime with it especially when he gets in my bed and wants to lick the pillows or sheets. I had him broke one time by just doing what I said above but he comes and goes with it. |

| There was a dog whisperer episode about a little Yorkie that was a rescue from a puppy mill. It had an obsession with licking. They cured it quite quickly. I was amazed at how fast they fixed her. It is a matter of constant firm training and redirecting. My Gracie loves to lick my daughter but I have taught her not to lick me more than a couple of times. Dogs know who they can get away with things with. Gracie really thinks she is the queen and would like to run the whole house if she could. |

| I wrote a short article about obsessive licking. (I still think a Vet check should be first.) I do agree that it is easy to fix excessiv licking, if it is just for attention. We use the cue word 'Enough' when a pup is people licking. If I can pull the article up, I will post it.

| Why Do They LICK So Much ? Trainers study behavior and I have studied licking. I know we have to train therapy dogs NOT to lick. This is my personal thoughts about licking. 1. Affection, short little licks, show affection 2. Excitement, Rapid excited licking, is to calm down. We have trained our Yorkies that friendly nipping and mouthing is not acceptable. Some dogs will grab a toy to control this nipping behavior. 3. Grooming, Slow leisurely licking is mutual grooming behavior. They are grooming you, they can not hold a comb or brush, you but they can lick you. Some trainers call this parenting behavior. Both male and female dogs lick puppies and other dogs. 4.Ownership, Claiming licks are different in the tempo and manner. Often the dog will put both paws on the person claiming them and will sometimes jump to get to the face area. I have noticed that dogs who are allowed to do this claiming type licking may growl and even bite if interrupted. And they don't want others to show or get affection with their person. 5. Appeasement Licking is similar to what small puppies do to show they are humble and friendly. Sometime this type of licking is accompanied by submissive posture and even belly up position. 6. Enough Kisses is a gently spoken cue for them to stop licking. It is important to end the licking on your terms. I am surprised that people often bulk at this simple discipline. It is mentally healthy for your dog to know when enough is, is enough. Sometimes I can almost 'see' a dog sigh in relief when told Enough Kisses.

| The guy on the television show I watched said that the puppy mill puppies learn the obsessive licking behavior from their moms. I guess it must have something to do with the boredom that the moms go through living their lives in a cage. I don't know what category that falls into but I do agree that it is a matter of retraining the brain. |
