| In need of advice...open fontanel? We are supposed to get our 10 week-old Yorkie puppy on Saturday and we just received a phone call saying that she has an open fontanel at about 1/2 cm. We did some research online and it says that this usually closes at 4-6 weeks but can sometimes completely close at 3-6 months. We are unfamiliar with this and are afraid to get attached to a dog only to later have to watch it suffer and become brokenhearted ourselves... Please help. I just don't know what to do...and we can't talk to the vet until tomorrow. I am hoping you may be able to offer some advice. Thank you... |

| Most close but some do not. Do you have a vet ? if so I would talk to your vet about it Before you get this pup. Also why 10 wks & not 12 as 12 or later is recomended & would give more time for the problem to rectify itself. Last edited by lillymae; 04-05-2012 at 09:05 PM. |

| I am no expert but I was told if they don't close it can cause severe seizures later in their little lives .

| I'm so sorry... I would let someone with more experience take on this little one, as he may have problems the rest of his life. This is a congenital problem...

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | That is a tough one. Definitely speak to your vet about this puppy. And be thankful the breeder was ethical enough to advise you of this situation prior to placement. There are other conditions that can be cocomittant with open fontanel. What exactly the risks are, is something you want your vet to advise you on. Once this is known, then you have a better idea whether or not you wish to run these risks. I would also suggest that the breeder keeps this dog for at least another two weeks; preferably to sixteen wks whereby the breeder can also do a BAT test for liver function.

| The puppy I was first going to get had an open fontenielle and it ended up dying suddenly. I would ask for the pup to have a vet check prior to adopting it

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My Roxie has an open fontanel that the breeder told me about. I decided to take her and she is 4 now and hasn't had any problems but there are no guarantees. Roxie's closed a little more by the age of one, but not completely. I keep her bow over the spot just to give a little extra protection. I would see what your vet says. It's hard to walk away but a sick puppy can be a heartbreaking experience.

| Faith has an open fontanel. I knew that when I got her and hoped it would close up. It didn't close up, but she has had no issues with it. Like Patti, I keep her top knot over that spot. I know other problems can sometimes arise with open fontanel, but I've been lucky so far. She will be 3 in May. Good luck to you in your decision. If you end up getting that little puppy, I think they should come down considerably on the price.
