| Abbreviations.... Sometimes only abbreviations are used when mentioning medical conditions. I just wanted to point this out because I have been doing medical transcription for more than 30 years ---and still don't know what all medical abbreviations stand for ---plus some medical abbreviations can mean more than just one thing.....and also new ones are being used every day. Several times, I have had to get out my medical books or go the Internet to see what one of your abbreviations might mean. It would be helpful if the person who first posts (regarding any medical condition) would spell it out in its entirety when it is first mentioned. After that, you, and others who answer your posts, can use the abbreviation and we'll know what it stands for. Thanks a lot - Carol Jean |

| I didn't want to mention any specific post or make anyone feel that I am critizing them - because I am not. One post I read recently wasn't a post by someone giving medical advise. It was a post by someone whose dogs have been very sick...seriously sick...very sad. I am doing this from memory. The orginal poster said that some six of her dogs had been treated for HGE. I believe she said that it had cost some $1000 plus per dog to treat them for this. Anyway - of course, I was curious regarding what might be wrong with her little dogs. I looked up HGE to see what it was. It stands for "hemorrhagic gastroenteritis" -- a very serious problem. Later posts by other people did say what HGE stood for...but I had already looked it up by then. This is a recent example of only an abbreviation being used -- when mentioning the entire name of the condition or medical entity would be very helpful. If "hemorrhagic gastroenteritis" has been mentioned only once - the abbreviation could have been used after that - and we would have known what it stood for. This is really no big deal - it would just be helpful...... Thanks for your reply. Carol Jean |
