| New Puppy Hi, I am new to this forum. I will be bringing my Yorkie home next weekend and I have a few of questions. 1. I have a 5 1/2 year old Shih Tzu that will be going with me to get the puppy. It is a 3 hour drive. Any suggestions on getting these two acquainted, or will the ride home be wild? 2. What do I do with the puppy the first night, do I crate him, pen off an area, or let him sleep with me and the Shih Tzu? The puppy is 6 1/2 weeks old. The breeder is going in the hospital, so I am getting him a little early. Thanks for any input. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome and congratulations! Like the other s have said make sure you have pedialyte and nutrical with you and watch for signs of hypoglcemia very carefully. I have a 8 1/2 yo pom and when I got the yorkie puppy a few months ago I introduced them outside and then inside. My pom does not like other dogs but has tolerated the puppy so far with only warning growls etc. If your shiz tsu is dog friendly you shouldn't have to much of a problem. Just watch she doesn't get to rough with the puppy. I also would recommend a crate or playpen at first. Good luck and post pics when you get them.

| Congrats on your new puppy and welcome. I also have a Shih Tzu, but she is 14 1/2 years old. We brought in a new puppy when she was a little younger than yours and she did fine with him. The yorkies that we now have are 2 years and 4 1/2 months so she tolerates them. I would just keep an eye on them for a couple of days to see how well they get along. My Shih Tzu doesn't think that she is a dog. I would think as long as you still show her the attention that you did prior to the new puppy or as much as you can that all will be well. I've never had to get onto her for being rough with the other dogs. Has yours been exposed on a regular or semi-regular basis to other dogs? Sorry to ramble. Good luck and please keep us posted on your babies.

| I just got mine Friday and she is 6 weeks old, I would be scared to death to sleep with her-she is so small. I have a small playpen that has worked quite welll and she goes to sleep as soon as I put her in it. This is just like bringing a new baby home! Congrats! and don't forget to the nutrical!! Quote:

| It all depends on how your baby reacts to other dogs, as everyone has said. Let him feel the new puppy out for himself with your supervision. My Bounce sometimes loves new dogs, and sometimes wants nothing to do with them at first. They all have such individual personalities. I also believe that crate training your baby is the best thing you can do for him. You'll have a better dog for it. I made that mistake with Bounce when he was young, but luckily he likes his crate now and will willingly go in it if I have cleaning to do or have to put him up while grooming an aggressive dog at work. I think you'll do just fine. You're doing great just being here! There are so many smart people in this forum.

| :Puppy: I crate trained my Shih Tzu, Bear, and he did fine. Then a couple of years ago we let him sleep with us in the motor home and now forget the crate. He gets along fine with my daughter in laws Shih Tzu/Maltese she weights about 3#. I think he will do fine, but he is so spoiled, he goes every where with us. I have a picture but could not get it to up load, one the breeder sent me, maybe after we get home, I can get my own pictures and get them to up load. Bear wasn't this small, so any hints will help. Thanks to everyone |
