| Coopers hair I keep a harness on Cooper during walks, we have many he never minds the harness on for a walk we take about 5 or so walks a day. This week he got out by mistake and was gone almost 24 hours. I went and got him a collar and tags to keep on all the time. He hates it, hates it's so much he pulls at his hair so much it's breaking off the hair around his neck is about an inch long now while his other hair is about 5 inches. He does the same with the harness. I'm looking for suggestions, I never had a collar on him in the house but after last week I think it's best But he is going crazy, any suggestions appreciated. He is just about four pounds he is long but skinny. I rescued him July will be two years he is 4 lived his first two years in a cage not well taken care of. He has come a long way in two years but this collar is making him crazy |

| I hope someone comes along with some advice for you. I don't know what to tell you to do. That's so sad, I'm sure, to see him miserable. Is he microchipped? There are also tattoos available. Is the collar as light as possible and the tag as well?

| He has a chip, I bought a few collars but they all about same I bought a nice cat collar too, he doesnt seem to mind the tag but hates the collar. He is going to have no hair left around his neck shortly. It was bad enough that I lost him last week but when asked if he had tags on I was so upset to say he has tags on when his harness is on but not while in house, I left the door open by mistake then went out he let himself out. I just don't know what to do about the collar he won't stop scratching at it. He is doing everything he can to get it off |

| Maybe try washing the collar and drying it before putting it back on him. Might be treated with something that is irritating him.

| i have an idea. would he wear a little t -shirt vest harness ? they make really tiny ones, i had one for oscar when he came home 12 wks, 4 lbs. you have , for example , your phone #embroidered on it, and/or the words: "check for microchip" just in case he did get out some time. http://www.baxterboo.com/dog/supplie...FcRM4AodrnE_Hg Last edited by MY OSCAR; 03-19-2012 at 02:46 AM. |

| Did he scratch like this before he was missing for a day? Have you bathed him since all this began? I'm wondering if it's not the collar but something else going on with him scratching. It's been very warm recently and it is allergy season. My suggestions would be bathe him in an anti-itch shampoo and if it still continues a vet visit. I am a very strong proponent of ALWAYS WEARING A COLLAR. There are just too many stories of dogs getting out and never being returned and it always seems like they were not wearing their collar with ID tags. Chipping is not enough~IMO. People need something to see immediately if they find a dog.

| You might just need to make him tough it out until he gets used to it. Give him the sound you use for stop whenever you see him scratch. Good luck.

| Ziva's hair broke off from the collar when she was a puppy, then we bought a silk collar from Cindy, made a big fuss about it being her necklace and how pretty she was. It didn't take to long before she would come running to put it on! Until Cindy goes back in business I have found the smooth light collars from 'lil pals work well.Cute too! |

| Cooper had a bath after his night out adventure, also went to the vet, it's the collar I'm sure. He wears shirts most all the time he doesnt mind clothes. I'm going to have a few shirts made fir him with his name and my number. I'm going to try the vest idea too, but the one I bought it's Velcro he can get out of it and pulls his hair he has left. I also started him on his allergy meds early this year even before he ran out and he only scratches under and around the collar. |

| How attached are you to his long hair? Maybe clip it short under the collar? Another thing you might try is to put the collar on for a few minutes at a time. Maybe give a treat each time, and then leave it on for longer and longer periods.

| I'm not attached to his hair, Cooper is a red legged yorkie so his hair doesn't grow well but he has pretty hair but I'm not attached to it, while my other yorkies got groomed once every five or six weeks Cooper can go 12 or 14 weeks. He doesn't have hair on his ears or much on his feet. I will also try it for shorter amounts of time, Cooper is not food motivated, when I first got him he was severely under weight and ate like crazy until it was gone, now he has learned that he will always have food so I guess it became less important,He also eats less since my other dog died, he is not a huge fan of treats, I make my own dehydrated chicken for him, he eats ziwi peak and Stella and chewies, but he isn't a big eater anymore. He does like the mills kitchen beef jerky treats so I'll work on collar on get a treat. |

| I also noticed that Connie, who is a member here, she makes clothes and has many vests with the d ring attached, so many cute styles too. Very reasonable....I hope you can get something figured out..

| It is just going to take some time for him to get used to it. Whenever we have had puppies they scratched and messed with there collars for a week or two and then realized they were gonna stay there and stopped messing with it. Just make sure it's not so big he can't get his mouth stuck on it.
