| Would your or do you vaccinate against Leptospirosis? Hello everyone. I took Jack to the vet yesterday to make sure he is up to date on his shots, etc. as we are taking him on vacation and I wanted to make sure he doesn't pick up anything while we are on vacation. Our vet mentioned the Leptospirosis vaccine and said that they had seen one case of it last year. I am having a tough time deciding whether this is something that I should have Jack get or not. So I just wanted to know your thoughts on this? Thanks!

| I'm thinking no, it's a higher risk for the side effects of the shot as apposed to contracting lepto., so I've been told repeatedly. I am curious as to what others do also!

| No, I don't. Ask your vet how many dogs he has seen that haven't had it. Don't let your pup drink out of rain puddles or gullies on walks can help prevent it.

| We are at our cabin every weekend from April to October. I get this shot every year for him. He's never had a reaction. |

| Copper my Chiweenie had a massive reaction from it, so I don't get any of my 4 vaccinated. They are only in my yard or my Mom's and we are in the city, so I feel safe not getting it for them. |

| We've never gotten it. The breeder marked her record "no lepto" and I am scared of the reaction. I don't plan on getting it, either.

| After discussing with my vet, I was a bit worried about the reaction. She said years ago almost all of the smaller breeds (Yorkies, Chihuahuas, teacup poodles) had a reaction to it, so the vets quit recommending and the owners of small breeds obviously shied away from the vaccine. She said, however, there have been advances in medicine over the years so the reactions are seen less frequently. She also said that the cases of Lepto are on the rise. Although we live in "the City of Macedonia" (not your typical downtown city like New York or Cleveland) we do have plenty of wild animals that come into the yard. I have seen raccoon, skunks, opossum, squirrels (they are everywhere aren't they?) and even deer (yes, I'm paranoid about deer ticks too... LOL) and the yard does have plenty of standing water - ever since they built the city center behind our house, our drainage has gone downhill... anyway, thank you all for your comments. For now, I am not going to get him vaccinated against it - if our lifestyles ever change, I will revisit the idea. Thank you all again for your thoughts!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I've never gotten it for them, and hope I won't have to. If it really was endemic in my area...I suppose I'd have to reconsider...but I'd really rather not.

| My girl had a severe reaction to it, so she will never get it again. Stil though, my 15 pound (non-yorkie) boy will get it yearly. I personally wouldn't give it to tiny dogs without a very good reason. Risk assessment from the disease and from the vaccine is all you can do. Lepto is a very serious problem in Michigan. If I had an almost solely indoor tiny dog, I probably wouldn't. If we liked to play outside, then yes I probably would. Reaction rate may be better, but it's definitely still somewhat common. Some strains of the disease and the treatment for it, including possible isolation, are a major concern to me though. The vaccine doesn't cover all strains and the duration of immunity is in question, but my dogs getting a strain like icterohemorrhagica isn't something I want them to go through.

I do not get it and if I EVER had to, like I tell ALL my parents, Have a shot of Benadryl 15 minutes prior to the shot, and then hang around the vet office for at least 20 - 30 minutes after the shot. That is the ONLY way I would ever let my babies get that shot, and ONLY IF IT BECOMES EPIDEMIC IN MY AREA! Risk outweighs the probability of getting the disease for my babies....and like Ellie May said, "Reaction rates are still common, vaccine doesnt cover all strains, duration of immunity is questionable" (like maybe only 6 months). |
