YT 2000 Club Member | Heart Attack OMG I'm gonna have a heart attack!! How the heck do you teach a 4 pound 1 1/2 year old yorkie that a 64 and 74 pound furkid can crush her and NOT to jump gates?? THANK GOD that Gracie and Elijah (our boxers) listen so well. Mags and Jazzie were in the livingroom with the gate up, I let Gracie and Elijah out of their kennels and the next thing I knew, I hear Ross (my husband) yellin from the living room, JAZZIE NO, NO,STOP! Then I hear Jazzies lil nails on the kitchen floor. I hurried and grabbed Gracie and Elijah and told them no, stay, and they did just that. Meanwhile, Jazzie runs into the laundry room right up to them and then Gracie and Elijah start gettin all wiggly and jiggly. Ross took the gate down to come catch Jazzie, and Mags takes off right behind him and then SHE'S in the laundry room with all of us as well. Yep, I think their tryin to give me a heart attack.... Do any of you have a 4 pound furkid that you let around your big furbuts? If so, how do you do it? Are you scared to death the lil ones will get hurt? With Mags, we always just put up the gate and she could have run of part of the house and the big furkids had the other rooms, and that was fine, but when we got Jazzie, we had to start doing crate and rotate cause gates mean nothing to her. I've been doing some looking around online at higher gates, I can't believe what they want for them, it's CRAZY!! So, I'm thinking about actually making some myself. I told Ross (my husband) I was about to make screen doors and put the heavy gauge wire mesh in them and put one where I normally put the gates, that way I KNOW she wouldn't get to the big furkids. Jazzies plum crazy, lol. I don't see HOW she can jump as high as she does for such a lil furgirl, I think she's spring loaded or something, lol. The highest gate I have here she jumps without even touching it!! These gates scare me with her to though, cause I'm always afraid she's gonna get her leg hung up in it one of these times and break her lil leg. That's why if I make my own gates, I'm gonna make the slats going up and down instead of how the gates are now that I have. I still think screen doors with heavy wire mesh would be better though. May not look the prettiest, but I know she wouldn't get over it.

| yes, and the trick is not to panic. i know that is the first reaction but it just makes everything more wild. i have an 85 pound airedale and a 12 pound shih tzu along with 6.5 pound oscar. they all actually get along pretty well execpt when they all want to play sometimes oscar will think it is ok to jump up at the airedale and grab his beard. the airedale is pretty good with him but still one wrong step and is all over for oscar. so i have taught them both the meaning of the words easy and gentle. mostly it depends on the temperment of the dogs too. supervision is a must but try to let them play together so you can teach everyone to play calm and you need to remain calm as well. good luck to ya... |

| That's the main reason when my GSD passed I got more Yorkies instead of another big dog...lol. Now one Yorkie is big for a Yorkie and I still have to watch that she doesn't get too riled up playing with the smaller ones... but my heart handles it better....

| I know lots of people mix sizes but I tend to agree with you, it's easier if your dogs are close in size to one another. The thing about yorkies is most think they are 60+ pounds and I was never able to unteach that to mine that felt they were the biggest dog in the room.

| I know what you know about panic. We have a yorkie, two shih tzus and a shorkie along with two basset hounds and when they get together it gets really hairy. I've had some pretty close encounters and although our basset hounds are the sweetest most lovable dogs in the world I'm always nervous with them because of their size. The two bassets weigh 65 lbs each and the biggest small dog we have is 21 lbs. The others are 16 lbs, 13 lbs and 10 lbs . |

YT 2000 Club Member | Gracie nor Elijah are aggressive furbabies, but I know that one paw to them could seriously hurt our lil ones, so I do everything possible to make sure they are not together where injuries can happen. Hubby and are talked and are just going to build gates this weekend, hope this works. It's so funny that Jazzie is the smallest one here but acts the biggest, lol.

| Although Georgie thinks he is so much bigger than he is he doesn't act like that with Coco our Boxer. She is the most gentle sweet girl ever! I will tell you when Coco passes (she is 12 1/2) we probably won't get another big dog. I would allow them to play when they are supervised and I know it's easier said than done but try to remain calm. Good luck

| Wow! You poor thing. After much consideration we decided to get Gypsy, I have two big human kids (11 and 12). And two very little ones (2 and 3). So I can relate to your stress. (not dogs, but little kids can be just as dangerous to smaller breeds) Gypsy is never allowed around the little ones without close supervision. (and I mean, someone standing and following wherever Gypsy goes). My daughter, 11 years old, has Gypsy's kennel/bed in her room, and Gypsy and her are inseparable. During family time if the littlest ones are running about, we'll just set up Gypsy's kennel in that room. Either Gypsy is in someone's lap or in her kennel. Luckily she's such a good girl, she doesn't mind. Especially since she gets lots of playtime outside or in my daughter's room with supervision, but separate from the littlest kids. |

| Bentley and my Boxer get along just great. I wouldn't have them loose in the fenced in yard as I would be afraid Baxter, the boxer would trample him by accident. In the house they are fine together. |

| Gracie is my only dog right now but I used to have a little Maltese and a Lab at the same time. They got along fine. The only time we had an issue was when we would come home from some where and they would both run to meet us at the door and be all excited. Sometimes the Maltese would get too close to the Lab's feet that were tap dancing all over the place. Sasha would get so mad at the Lab for getting in front of her that she would bite at the Lab's ankles and growl at him! The Lab would not even notice her. He was a good guy. He was younger than Sasha and had a higher energy level that would annoy her sometimes. We never had to separate them. |
