Default Help!!!

I have a four month old female yorkie puppy who has started doing something strange. She has an exercise pen in my bedroom and on the floor is one of those plastic runner rugs. I noticed her dragging her butt on the ground today. Then I noticed when she drags her butt she leaves a brownish colored streak. I googled this and it was suggested that it may be her anal glands. One article said that her dragging her butt is her way of emptying her anal glands.
So my question is is this something she needs to see the vet for? I know some dogs need their anal sacs expressed sometimes but I wasnt sure if she is doing it herself.
Please help

Kyra does this after she potty's to wipe herself But when we had our little Lolita she would do this when she needed glands expressed its really a very simple thing to do. I always did it at bath time.

So even though she is dragging her butt kind of expressing them herself I still need to do it.

I would watch her and if she seems to do it alot I would first get her checked to make sure no worms then at the same time the vet can check her glands and let you know if you need to express them.

I've been around so many dogs all my life, including rescue dogs, family and friends and neighbor's dogs, and usually that action of butt-scooting without fail indicated problems. My dogs never did it unless there were anal sac problems or worms.

We had Kyra checked for both and she had neither issue. Vet said since only happens immediately after she poo's it is probably her way of cleaning herself. She does not scoot with back legs up like have had other dogs with worms or anal sacs do just a small scoot and she is done lol.

Oh, I know it happens that some dogs do it for no disease-related reason but it is almost always an indicator of problems and in all the dogs I've been around over the years, including many rescues, none of them proved to be problem free when they did it repeatedly. Any dog will do it if they are just itching in the area or feel something there they want to try to remove but butt-scooting that happens more than just very occasionally is almost always a symptom of some type of problem/pathology. I would vet her and hope she is like yours - just doing it to try to clean off or has an itch.

In this dog's case, though, leaving a trail of brown sounds like she is not getting her bowel completely emptied with just normal straining-at-stool and I believe I would want to know why.

I agree -- I suspect it's worms or anal glands.

I've expressed Tatiana anal glands (when she was dragging her bottom, and her anal glands were swollen). It's not difficult, but it's messy.

These days, I haven't had to express her glands. She no longer drags her bottom along the floor. I think it's because I improved her diet for her. In the past, I added yogurt to her food, and it softened her stools a lot (almost watery). I suspected the yogurt upset her tummy, and gave her loose stools. In turn, her glands were not naturally expressed when she pooped (because her stools were too soft). When I omitted the yogurt in her food (and gave her calcium powder instead), her stools became firm. She stopped dragging her bottom. I think her glands were naturally expressed by the firm stools.

Sorry if this post is too long. Just want to share in case it helps.

Thanks for all of the help. I am going to see if she is still doing it when I get home from work today. If so I'm going to take her to the vet. I just hope all is good.

Whenever my male does this more than once, I take him to my vet to get his glands expressed. The vet always tells me after they do it that they were completely full, so this seems to be the truth for him. My female however, seems to empty hers on her own. I have not ever had hers expressed and she never scoots.

It also could be a problem with worms as others have said... I would get it checked out.

Oh, I'm glad you're taking him in. May be nothing but if it is, you can catch it fairly early and get good treatment. Here's hoping that baby is going to be just fine.

Mine did it when she was little if all the poop didn't come off/out. Is her poo soft?

Is her hair long? If a little is caught in the hair they know it and want it off. That is why I keep Maggie's butt cut short. When I get her groomed I like it almost shaved all the way, then if stuff starts sticking it is usually time for a haircut. One time she was outside and kept squatting and moving and squatting, AFTER she had pooped. I realized then that a little nugget was caught on a strand of hair and I think she was trying to poop it off. I had to help it fall off!

When she was little, and probably before she was even groomed (so long butt hair) we kept baby wipes around and wiped her tush so that if she scooted there was no stain.

Also, when she was young she had a bout of coccidia (i think that was it) and that might have caused it.

I have read that if the poop is properly firm the glands should be sort of naturally expressed when they go. If the poo is soft they are more likely to fill up.
