| Resticted movement;please help with ideas! Hey, guys! You folks are the best at coming up with awesome ideas, so please help me with this problem! Because of the surgery to mend her fractured growth plate, I have to keep my normally active and kooky 5 month old puppy Wosie VERY QUIET for at least 4 weeks, and limited movement for a total of 3 months. No running, jumping, playing, etc. WHAT am I to do?? She is going nuts, she is so bored. She has never been crated for any length of time outside of boarding, but now I have to crate her to restrict her movement. She will tolerate the crate for a little while, and that's not long. Since I got her from the hospital yesterday morning, she and I have been inseperable. I have been either holding her or she has been in a box at my side. I think mainly I need help in the area of entertainment. She has a ton of chew toys which I only give her in small numbers, and if it looks like she is getting bored with one, I switch it out with another. But she wants to PLAY and doesn't understand why she has to be restricted of course. Any ideas? Thanks so much for any help you can give me! Here's a pic of Wosie post-surgery. My husband has given her a new nickname-Baldy Butt! Don't worry, I smacked him.

| Poor Pupster!!! First thing I would do is feed all of her food to her in a Kong while in her crate. Let her entertain herself by working to get her food out. Now would be an awesome time to start clicker training. There are tons of things you could teach with her laying down - attention (eye contact), a paw lift, lick her chops, look left or right, ear flicks, you name it. If you're interested in clicker training, I'll post some websites for you. |

| I posted on the other thread. The only thing I could think of to pass the time was car rides for entertainment and limiting her area so she won't start running like mine does through the house!

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Alot of people who have yorkies who have broken legs or had surgery use strollers ...that way...you can still take her out but she'd be confined - I hope she heals perfectly and good luck - I wish I could add more but yorkies are hard to keep still... I know BOTH my girls have to follow me everywhere - they're little hairy stalkers....maybe make a papoose to carry her around in while you are in the house so she is off her feet ? lol - Kangaroo mommies do that !! but the suggestions were already great here - mine are just for thought purposes only |

| Thanks! I appreciate all any any suggestions. I do have a front pack for her which would certainly make it easier to carry her around, but it is a soft pack and not enough support for her leg. However, it might be possible to put something of substance (wood, plexiglass) in the bottom under the zippered lining to give her more support. Thanks for that, V, it sure would make it easier to have two hands free! Any other ideas?

| Here are links to clickertraining sites, the first being my all-time favorite: http://www.clickersolutions.com/arti....htm#behaviors http://www.clickerlessons.com/lessons.html http://www.dragonflyllama.com/%20DOG...evelsBook.html This one isn't a clicker site, but has some ideas of dog tricks (which you can, of course, teach with the clicker!): http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/P.../indexorg.html Have fun! |

| Thank you so much! These links are great! Thank you so much! I will have to weed through them to get the ones that require a near motionless pup, but I am sure I will find some. Attention is a great way to start! Thanks again! Quote:

| You're welcome! There may not be a whole lot listed that you can do with pup on bedrest, but there will be some. And, after you've spent some time reading, I'm sure you'll be able to come up with your own ideas! Let us know what you teach your pup, okay? |

| I went through the same thing with my Bichon - He ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and was supposed to be crated for a couple months until it healed. I just wasn't very good at doing that. I didn't let him outside, but let him loose in the house and kept an eye on him. He didn't jump up on things because he couldn't. I lifted him up and down. I kept him on the davenport beside me a lot of the time. He slept with me. I did carry him up and down the stairs (outside) and let him walk on a leash to go to the bathroom outside. We did the best we could - and we were fortunate in that he healed very well in spite of my not being very good about following directions. My Bichon was 3 years old and had never been crated or tied up in his whole life. I will have to admit that he behaved well during this time and stayed pretty quiet almost all the time. It's as though he knew he was supposed to do that. And - also, he really didn't feel like being real active during that time. He had a very sore knee for a long time. Good luck!!! Carol Jean |
