New yorkie mommy, need some advice Hi everyone, My name is Laurie, and I've recently become the mommy of my 3-month-old Yorkie boy, Toby (short for Toblerone . I'm so glad I found these forums, since it seems like there is a LOT of good information contained here... I'd feel a bit lost without something like this around to reference. I actually had a few questions that I was wondering if I could get some advice on: 1. At what age can a little Yorkie be taken to dog parks and puppy classes? I would like to start socializing my puppy to new people and dogs, but am unsure about the risk of him catching diseases. Would 15-weeks-old and all current vaccinations be adequate? 2. I live in Northern California, and will be taking a snowboarding trip to Lake Tahoe and I was wondering if Yorkies can be taken to cold, snowy places? Do young puppies have a big risk of catching cold in such an environment? Would this be safe, or would I be better off finding a pet-sitter? 3. Along the same lines as question 2, is it unhealthy to subject to Yorkies to travel and long road trips? Thanks for any help! Sheesh, I can already feel myself becoming super anxious and worried and anal...

Hi Laurie , I'm not really sure about the social thing My pup is almost 3 months and I take her to the park , but we live in rural Iowa and the only other dog she comes in contact with is my girlfriends. She's not really sure what to think of her though and sits in my lap most of the time. I can assure you that yorkies can be in the cold but not for long periods of time , we go out to potty when its cold and usually come right back in , and she wears her coat too. My breeder warned me that yorkies can get pnemonia easy in the cold and to be careful with how long she's out ect. so if you plan on being outside with your puppy , I'd find a sitter. As for road trip's I'm about to find out myself how they do , my parents have a yorkie and jasper went everywhere with them , I plan on taking Kai to colorado next week. Does your puppy get car sick? Ive had that problem with Kai. Just a word of warning about dog parks be careful with your yorkie around bigger dogs my parents yorkie got attacked by a big dog when they where camping , the dog was off the leash and ran right up to their yorkie (he was on a leash) and my parent's could not get the big dog off. Jasper suffered broken ribs , and a broken leg. He did live and is fine now , (but he is not as tuff as he use to act around big dogs) anyways I hope some one can help more then I did!! LOL

Well about number 2 I can help you. I live in Toronto which is I think we can aggree a tad north of you. I've been walking Sheila (ok carrying, not walking) her 80 minutes a day to and from daycare (right by work) snow or shine. She wears a puppy coat and a small baby blanket now and at first I wrapped her in a blanket. She is smalish and maybe 2 pounds now at 13 weeks. I aked my vet about the cold and mind you he is in his 60's and loves yorkies about my baby and the cold. His response? "for christ sake the breed comes from Northen England, they can handle a little cold" I do wrap her up if it's below `10 celcius just to be safe though. My vets opinion and much of what I've read/heard is that what we all have and love ARE little terriers. It's important they are allowed to be just that and not over pampered. A yorkie in their own mind is a big dog, yes protect them but please don't treat them like they are porceline figurines! A lot of breeders feel it's hurting the standard. That's why in some shows the "stand off" where they put 2 yorkies together face to face is so important. Yorkies are a toy dog in our eyes, not theirs Sorry, if I rambled... I do that! Congrats on your new boy! Before anyone else says it... we want pictures!

| As ffar as taking yourdog out I would ask your vet for his recomendation on that. My vet will not let me take my dog out at all untill all vaccinations are done. In fact he just gave me the go ahead that I can take him out in my yard.

Our two have sweaters when they go outside. But they usually won't stay out there long. Chuhga gets car sick. I give her a half tablet of human dramamine. I smuch it up and add just a smidge of water and give it to her in a baby syringe. Not too much water. It must taste REALLY bad. LOL
