Senior Yorkie Talker | Amara's first heat cycle. :( Amara got her first heat cycle today. I'm really concerned about her. She seems to be doing ok. I'm just really concerned it could be hard on her body. I had planned to get her spayed but my mom kept putting it off. We have her in little diapers now. But are there any risks that I should know of if I get her spayed after she goes into heat? I really wanted to catch her before she went into heat. But my mom was procrasinating. So now I'm stuck for a few weeks. Is there anything I should know about how to help her through her heat cycle. I know its hard on me to have a menstrual. I just don't want her to have to go through that sucky time and feel the way I do. If anyone has anything to offer please do. Any tips or advice will be gladly accepted.

| I think a dogs heat lasts for a month. Make sure to completely keep her away from all intact male dogs the diaper will not keep mateing from occurring.

YT 2000 Club Member | The only advice I can give is, after she's out of heat, get her spayed ASAP. Have you ever heard of pyometra? If not, look it up, this is something that all female animals can get. I almost lost my cat to it some years back. I also just lost my girl Dottie on 02/04/2012 from pyometra which was secondary to her uterus being full of cancer, she also had a mammary tumor. These are all thing which can be avoided if a female gets spayed. There's a chance they can still get Stump Pyometra, but the chances are way, way lower after being spayed, and so are mammary tumors. I wish for no one to ever feel the devastation and loss I am going through right now.... And as stated above, keep her away from all male dogs, don't let her out to go potty unleashed and unsupervised, and if you have male dogs in the house, crate and rotate. Good luck.

| I almost lost my little Maltese to the same thing Beabble mentioned when she was 6 months old. Watch that she remains as active as ever and eating and drinking with no fever. Call and make that appointment now. It will take a couple of weeks for them to have an opening anyway. Just pick a day that is good for you and ask for it. If she goes outside be very careful. Male dogs can smell a dog in heat for miles away and will come looking for her. Where ever she pees will have the odor. Most small dogs don't bleed an awful lot and she will want to keep herself clean. Hope all goes well for you. |

| Well, I was going to respond but it looks like everyone else pretty much covered everything. Good luck with your little one!

Senior Yorkie Talker | Its ok. I'm lucky enough to have so many people to help out with my baby Amara. I may not be the perfect yorkie owner but I try my best to be.
